Caroline Flack's mum says documentary on late star has 'made year more bearable'

Caroline Flack’s mother Christine Flack says talking about her late daughter in a new documentary has made the year more bearable.

The television presenter took her own life on February 15, 2020 at the age of 40, with her death being ruled as suicide by a coroner at an inquest.

Speaking ahead of the Channel 4 documentary Caroline Flack: Her Life And Death, Christine said that speaking to director Charlie Russell about Caroline’s life has helped her over the past 12 months.

She said: “He was like our therapist for a year.

“He’s made this year bearable because it was someone we could talk to that wasn’t another member of the family.

“We did find making the film was good for us. It was very sad and If I could write I’d have written a book about it but I can’t, so we were able to get this out with Charlie.

“I probably wouldn’t have looked at all the all the old footage and photographs yet.”

She added: “There are still lots of things we can’t do yet. My eldest daughter still hasn’t even looked at the Strictly film.

“She can’t bring herself to look at things yet. I think because we were doing the film we were looking at things again and remembering things, funny things.”

The documentary covers the former Love Island presenter’s journey up to her death, and subjects including mental health and trolling.

It features the presenter’s close friends and colleagues Olly Murs and Dermot O’Leary, plus her twin sister Jody, who has admitted she had some reservation before agreeing to take part in the programme.

“I didn’t see a reason to make it. There wasn’t enough of a reason to make a film for me but after talking together we came up with one,” Jody said.

“Quite close to the end she [Caroline] asked us to help tell her story.

“We didn’t know what programme was going to be made, but having seen it now it’s very much about mental health.

“I’d like the film to reduce shame. There is a lot of shame involved in all of this, which there didn’t have to be, so if we can reduce shame surrounding these issues that would be good.”

Jody said: “I would beg her to change jobs and leave showbiz but she never would. Life would have been easier but she wasn’t built for an easy life.

“She was always scared she’d be ridiculed, she was terrified to admit her mental health struggles.”

Jody says in the documentary that her twin had been “fascinated by the subject of suicide”, adding: “I was prepared that it could happen.”

The Flack family are speaking in a bid to encourage viewers to be more open about their mental health struggles and seek help where necessary.
