Channel 5 surgery show hit with 7k Ofcom complaints after Charlotte Crosby fury

Channel 5 show Celebrities: What’s Happened To Your Face has been flooded with Ofcom complaints after airing an episode analysing former Geordie Shore star Charlotte Crosby’s face and her cosmetic surgeries on April 22.

Ofcom has confirmed that they’ve received 7,082 complaints after Charlotte hit out at the show, saying in a lengthy Instagram post that “enough is enough”.

The show was hit with heavy backlash after it aired an episode focusing on the “facial flaws of the famous”, which was dedicated to Charlotte, with doctors and experts commenting on her facial features and potential cosmetic work.

Charlotte quickly took to social media to slam the show, writing: “I cannot quite believe I am saying this but here goes. Last night, Channel 5 & Crackit Productions put out a one-hour documentary called ‘Celebrities – What Happened To Your Face – Charlotte Crosby.

“In 2021 a main UK channel & production company believed it would be a good use of airtime to dissect my physical appearance.”

She added: “I have seen how many of you saw it, switched off & complained – many not even “fans” of me, just good people who know right from wrong. Thank you for that, and for your messages of love and support.

“I am aware I have put myself and my face in the public eye. TV and broadcasting has given me and my family a life we could never have dreamed of.”

She added that if people were to search for her name on Google or social media, they would see how intensely trolled she is, adding that she has “learnt to ignore the hate and focus on the positives”.

The star also slammed Channel 5 and the show’s production team Crackit for deciding to commission the programme on “rubber lip Charlotte”, whilst backing a policy of “be kind”.

Charlotte wrote: “”Their ‘experts’ dissected my ‘plastic face’ with disgust, discussing my fluctuating weight (with images), and then decided to flash up the worst troll comments from the past 5-6 years.

“I want to say here for context. When this was commissioned last March 2020, my agent found out about it and was appalled.

“She very clearly outlined to Crackit Productions not just how immoral and insensitive it was but how detrimental this would be to my mental health. They ignored her, despite repeated correspondence, and ran with it regardless.

“We only found out this week when it was in the TV listings that it was still going ahead – unbelievable.”

The reality star continued: “Dealing with trolls is one thing, you ignore, you block,” she said. “BUT where are we as a society when the trolls are the mainstream TV channels? Will they now take responsibility for my dip in mental health and my plummeted self-esteem?

Charlotte continued: “Channel 5 have a list of mental health helplines on their website – is this for viewers or the subjects of their poor choice in programming like me?

“Broadcasters are so keen to do psych tests for shows, yet at the same time give space to programmes which destroy the mental health of its subjects.

“That hour could have been used to host a mental health documentary. That hour could have educated the public in the many issues & good causes which need publicity.

“That hour didn’t need to go after a 31-year-old woman for her appearance, choices and ”rubber lips.'”

Channel 5 later apologised and took the show off its catch up service

She finished off the statement by saying: “When is enough enough?Just because we’re in the public eye, doesn’t mean we aren’t human. Fortunately I’m strong enough to deal with it but many aren’t.”

After Charlotte’s statement, a spokesperson for Channel 5 said: “Channel 5 and the programme’s producers, Crackit Productions, take duty of care very seriously.

“While we acknowledge that the programme was OFCOM compliant, we have taken on board Charlotte’s feedback and removed the episode from our streaming platform My5. We apologise for any upset caused.”

In the show, Dr Sabrina Shah-Desai analysed Charlotte’s looks and said that the star was at risk of going too far with her cosmetic work.

She said on camera: “She’s very young, her skin will bounce back if she just dissolved some of the bad work.

“Nobody’s willing to tell them they’ve gone too far, the practitioner isn’t telling them, they’ve got a circle of friends who think it’s acceptable and very quickly go into this ‘filler fatigue’, this face that quite obviously looks not beautiful anymore, just very plastic.”
