Davina McCall says menopause was 'frightening' with 'overwhelming mental fog'

Davina McCall has discussed the embarrassment she felt taking HRT treatment.

The Big Brother icon, who has a brand new Channel 4 documentary coming soon, said: “Somehow menopause is shameful to admit, in a million different ways. You’re past your sell-by date. You’re not a baby-maker.”

She went on: “My sleep was interrupted two or three times a night and it caused a chain of events in my brain that really frightened me.

“The mental fog and confusion were so overwhelming.”

The star is hoping that her new documentary will break down the myths about menopause and hormone replacement therapy, combatting the shame associated.

On discussing the upcoming documentary, she told Radio Times: “This film isn’t just for menopausal women, it’s for their partners, their fathers, their brothers, and their sons.”

The documentary is following the news that Davina has had to pass up on her commitment to the Channel 4 show Changing Rooms after the lockdown pushed back production dates, conflicting with her schedule.

Kate Muir, producer of the documentary, said: “We’ve discovered making this film how much better-informed women – and their doctors – could be about hormones and the menopause.”

Menopause is a natural part of ageing and often effects women between the ages of 45 to 55.

Around 1 in 100 women go through menopause before the age of 40 and HRT can help relieve symptoms through the replacement of oestrogen to the system.

Symptoms of menopause can range from hot flushes and difficulty sleeping to more severe cases of memory and concentration problems.

Davina said this about her own experience on The Mid.Point podcast: “I went to my doctor and I said, ‘Look, please help me, I think I’ve got Alzheimer’s because obviously my dad’s got Alzheimer’s.'”

The doctor then went on to tell her that it’s called a cognitive overload.

Davina McCall: Sex, Myths and Menopause will be airing on Wednesday, May 12 at 9pm on Channel 4.
