Doctor Who fans slam 'horrific' special effects they compare to first Harry Potter film

Doctor Who fans were left fuming on Sunday night as Jodie Whittaker made her reappearance as the thirteenth Doctor, alongside her trusty companion Yaz, as the CGI was less than what they’d hoped for.

The BBC sci-fi drama returned for a Halloween special dubbed Flux ahead of Jodie’s final series.

The show opened with both the Doctor and Yaz hanging upside down from a ‘gravity board’, while an acid sea swirled around them.

But they soon got the best of the villain holding them captive, and began to swirl through the air while handcuffed to the floating board and surrounded by eerie green light.

However, fans were left less than impressed by the special effects – with some even comparing it to 2001 fantasy flick Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

The film includes some sweeping flying scenes while Harry tries out his first broomstick – but the CGI used remains firmly in the very beginning of the 21st century, and effects have come a long way since then.

By the end of the franchise, flying scenes looked a lot more impressive.

Taking to Twitter, one unhappy fan wrote: “I don’t think my son is that impressed by #DoctorWho anymore. ‘Pattern up your special effects, man. That is some Philosopher’s Stone level Quidditch!”

Someone else chipped in: “I’m sorry but the opening scene is making me think of #HarryPotter brooms, am I the only one? LOL!”

Another fan echoed: “Oh right – these effects have gone right downhill!”

“Initial reaction #DoctorWho I know it’s not real but it does look more fake than a Gucci bag from a back alley.

“CGI SFX budget for this episode spent on a round of Fosters it seems!” a fourth viewer quipped.

However, other fans were simply chuffed to see the return of one of Doctor Who’s creepiest villains ever – the Weeping Angels.

They first appeared in an episode featuring David Tennant as the Doctor – Blink, starring Hollywood star Carey Mulligan.

“Weeping Angels, here we gooo!” one excited fan posted on Twitter.

As another followed up: “The episode of Doctor Who in which the Weeping Angels first appeared (Blink) was the best episode ever made!”

“Weeping Angles at Halloween! Whyyyy!” another terrified viewer followed up.

And a fourth penned: “I will never not be creeped out by the Weeping Angels. Such a cool monster!”
