EastEnders viewers were left perplexed as a scene during tonight’s episode saw the characters discussing the Covid-19 vaccine, but none of them were wearing masks.
Karen, Patrick and Suki were speaking about the coronavirus while in the shop, but none of them were wearing face masks inside.
Patrick was thrilled as he walked into the Minute Mart as he told Suki he’d had his second Covid vaccination.
Suki revealed she was having her first one later on that day, but when Karen overheard she revealed she didn’t want hers.
She said: “Rather you than me!” as she entered the store to pick up a packet of cigarettes.
Viewers found it puzzling that EastEnders included the jab as part of the storyline, but didn’t show the characters following the government guidelines.
One viewer tweeted: “They can mention the vaccines but they still don’t wear masks or close businesses…”
While another wrote: “It’s funny how this is the only soap not to use masks yet they are banging on about the vaccine!”
A third typed: “If you’re that concerned about Covid, maybe show people actually wearing masks etc?”
“Vaccination conversation between Karen, Patrick and Suki in EastEnders with no one wearing a mask inside that shop. Either ignore the pandemic altogether or show its realities…” penned a fourth.
During the scene, Suki referred to Karen as “one of them anti-vaxxers”.
Karen said: “You must admit they pushed it through too quick.
“Lab rats, that’s what we are! I ain’t having any of that rubbish pumped into me.”
She continued: “Dolly Parton, she can say what she likes. Normally, I’m with her all the way, but who knows what it’s going to do to us in five, ten years time?”
Patrick shook his head and reminded Karen how he was in intensive care during the first lockdown.
He said: “Last year, I was lying on a hospital bed, gasping for breath! I thought it was all over. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.”
EastEnders continues Tuesday at 7.35pm on BBC One.
