Olly Murs has revealed he ‘questions’ whether he could have done more to prevent the tragic death of his friend Caroline Flack.
The singer, who hosted the X Factor with Flack, opened up about how he was not as close with his fellow presenter in the two or three years leading up to her death.
Speaking on The Joe Wicks podcast, the grieving pop star added ‘it doesn’t make sense’ that Flack is gone as she is ‘still here’ in his eyes.
He said: “At the time, could we have all done more? Could we have all protected her more? I don’t know.
“I wasn’t that close with Caz at that time I wasn’t in her bubble.
“In the last two or three years we had only really seen each other here and there, we were doing our own thing.
“So, I do question it all the time whether I could have done more – (I think) could I have done this or could I have gone out (with her).”
When speaking of the Climb for Caroline trek he did to raise money in memory of his friend, Murs admitted he is still coming to terms with the idea that she is gone.
The 37 year old said: “Grief is so tough and even now it’s really difficult to think that we did a climb for someone that in my eyes is still here – it doesn’t make sense that she is not here and it doesn’t compute yet.
Murs revealed that he broke down in tears when asked to speak about Flack who was found dead at the age of 40 in February 2020.
After completing the Climb for Caroline trek, which he did with other close friends of the late TV presenter, Murs explained that the group went out for dinner.
He said: “All of a sudden we went round the table and everyone had to say something and I was so caught off guard.
“They asked me to say something and I couldn’t speak I just broke down and cried the whole time in front of all these strangers that I don’t really know.”
Murs added the trek – which saw the group climb 18 peaks in the Lake District in 24 hours – was a ‘beautiful thing.’
The singer said they raised around £30,000 for the Samaritans and Flack’s mum messaged him afterward saying how proud she was of the team that did the charity hike.
Caroline tragically took her own life at the age of 40.
