Eternals actress Gemma Chan is enchanting fans as celestial Sersi, but long before starring in Marvel’s latest superhero film, she has been dazzling fans as a model, forming bonds with other Marvel stars and could have ended up on an entirely different career path altogether as a lawyer.
Born on November 27, 1982, Gemma grew up in Kent and later went on to study Law at Worcester College, Oxford.
She was offered a job at a law firm, but instead chose to pursue a career in acting and Hollywood – but not before working as a model for some of the world’s biggest brands.
Gemma modelled to raise money to fund her drama school training, and having been photographed for brands including Selfridges and magazines such as Elle and Cosmopolitan, it’s no surprise that Gemma has some serious style credentials on the red carpet.
She even got to the final of Sky One’s Project Runway, cementing her status as a style icon.
Gemma certainly showed that she knows how to style at look at the UK Gala premiere of Eternals too, wowing fans with her sheer see through skirt, thigh high boots and hooded top covered in crystals.
Before Eternals though, she completed her acting training at The Central School of Speech and Drama in London, landing her first on screen roles in hit television series including Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars and Mia in Channel 4 programme Humans, for which Gemma was nominated for many awards.
It wasn’t just stardom that she found while working on the programme Fresh Meat in 2011 though – she also found romance, having met ex-boyfriend and comedian Jack Whitehall on the series.
The couple dated for six years and lived in a flat in Notting Hill, London.
They split in 2017, with reports saying that the couple broke up due to the difficulties around trying to make their relationship work around their busy schedules.
However, Jack and Gemma continue to remain close friends.
Since then, Gemma has been in a relationship with another star from the Marvel Universe.
She has been dating Dominic Cooper since 2018, who played a younger version of Iron Man’s father Howard Stark in 2010’s Captain America.
In real life she also has a close bond with another Marvel co-star, the Bodyguard actor Richard Madden, who plays Icaris opposite Gemma’s Sersi in Eternals.
The actors have known each other for over 10 years, having shared the same circle of friends, but had never worked together until now.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-star Richard said he was delighted to finally get to work with Gemma after knowing her for so long: “Because we’ve known each other so long, we already have this trust and rapport.
“We know how to push each other’s buttons. We know how to make each other laugh.”
He added: “We wanted to bring out the best in each other, so it makes it just a nice, organic process.”
