Musicals week on Strictly Come Dancing wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but former professional James Jordan has received pushback from fans over his criticism of Rose Ayling-Ellis’s routine.
Writing in their Hello! magazine column, James and his wife Ola gave their thoughts on Saturday’s dances.
Reflecting on EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis’ Frozen-themed quickstep with Giovanni Pernice, James was unimpressed.
“Rose and Giovanni came out with a Quickstep, but I didn’t think it was their best performance,” he said. “I think we’ve seen such great things from this pairing, that our expectations were set extremely high.”
Ola, 39, replied: “Last week we said Rose deserved to go all the way to the final and take home the glitterball, but this week’s performance felt a little average from them.”
James, 43, responded: “I agree – I’m only being so critical because we’ve seen final standard dances from them already! Their dance was a perfect example of when the theme of the musical takes over from the quality of dancing.”
Although the couple’s critique was fairly balanced, fans were unimpressed and took to social media to vent.
One wrote: “Nowt like a bit of bitter controversy in a rather desperately vain attempt to stay relevant.”
Another said: “I can’t believe how much bitterness this couple are carrying around with them. It’s years since Strictly dumped them… get over it and get on with your own lives.”
And a third viewer added: “Rose was amazing as usual, and defo my winner.”
It’s unlikely that Rose, 27, will let any catty words put her and Giovanni, 31, off their game.
She was recently seen leaving the Strictly rehearsal studio with her rarely-seen boyfriend Samuel Arnold following a training session with Giovanni.
Rose, who plays Walford’s Frankie Lewis, has been in a relationship with Samuel for around seven years, but it’s not often that the couple are seen together in public.
Rose and Giovanni’s recent Couple’s Choice routine, set to Clean Bandit’s Symphony, continues to earn praise. The dance featured a silent segment to bring hearing viewers in to the deaf world.
