Game of Thrones was a hugely successful show that dominated TV for the eight years it ran.
But Game of Thrones already had a legion of built-in loyal fans because of George R R Martin’s equally popular A Song of Ice and Fire book series.
The show became a massive pop culture hit. It broke HBO viewership records, made the cast household names, and received many TV award nominations.
No matter how people feel about the final season of the series, Game of Thrones has carved its permanent place in the TV history books.
To celebrate Lena Headey’s birthday, we take a look at what the cast of the show have been up to since the series ended two years ago.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Nikolaj played Jaime Lannister, the legendary Kingslayer, in all eight seasons of the show.
Since it ended he swapped Westeros for a Netflix survival drama Against the Ice, which he also created.
Set in 1909, he plays a captain determined to refute the US’s claim to North Eastern Greenland.
He also starred as a man whose daughter went missing in The Silencing and in Danish terrorist drama The Day We Died.
He’ll next star in the upcoming scripted serial killer series Mask of Sanity and just in case that wasn’t enough murder, he’ll soon appear in the thriller God Is a Bullet with Jamie Foxx.
Sophie Turner
Sophie played Sansa Stark, the eldest daughter of the Starks who undergoes quite a journey throughout the show.
Since the show ended she has gone on to reprise her role as Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix in 2019 and appeared in thriller series Survive.
She is currently on HBO’s The Prince, an animated series centring on Prince George, voicing his sister, Princess Charlotte.
Most significantly, she married Jonas Brother Joe Jonas in 2019 and they welcomed a baby girl called Willa the following year.
Her role in The Prince garnered a lot of criticism, as fans labelled her a “hypocrite” for mocking a child when she had previously asked paparazzi to respect the privacy of her own daughter.
Maisie Williams
Maisie played Arya Stark, the adventurous, tomboy Stark girl.
She played Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane, a Scottish mutant who shape-shifts into a wolf in X-Men film The New Mutants.
In 2019, she also launched a social media platform called Daisie. It aims to be a networking site for creatives looking to collaborate on projects, and to help newcomers receive exposure for their work.
Soon, we’ll be able to catch her in the FX series all about the Sex Pistols, Pistol produced and directed by Danny Boyle.
Recently, she has been flaunting her fashion chops with experimental looks, including at the Met Gala earlier this month.
Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie played Missandei, Daenerys’s trusted advisor and handmaiden.
Nathalie next starred in Hulu’s reboot of Four Weddings and a Funeral, and comedy-drama Holly Slept Over which both failed to capture audiences.
Her biggest turn post-GOT was when she bagged a role in F9, also known as Fast & Furious 9 alongside Vin Diesel.
Nathalie has also worked on audio series Unsinkable, with fellow GOT actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and John Malkovich, as well as The Coldest Case, which reunited Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul and Krysten Ritter.
She will next star in the prequel to Zack Snyder’s Netflix movie Army of the Dead.
Isaac Hempstead Wright
Isaac Hempstead Wright played Bran Stark, one of the youngest of the Stark clan and eventual Three-Eyed Raven.
This year he starred in a film called Voyagers – a science fiction film that depicts the story of 30 people sent into space to search for a new home.
The film has an all-star cast that includes Colin Farrell, Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead, and Tye Sheridan.
He also returned to university to study neuroscience at University College London.
Alfie Allen
Alfie Allen played Theon Greyjoy over the course of Game of Thrones.
He went on to have a role in the Oscar-winning film Jojo Rabbit and the critically acclaimed film How to Build a Girl.
In January, Alfie appeared in the miniseries White House Farm. The miniseries focused on the 1985 crime that resulted in the murder of five family members at an Essex farmhouse alongside fellow Game of Thrones stars Gemma Whelan and Mark Addy.
He’ll next be appearing alongside his father Keith Allen in La Cha Cha, and Netflix thriller Night Teeth, which centres on a chauffeur who must fight for survival after a routine job turns into a nightmare.
Emilia Clarke
Emilia played the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen on the show.
She starred in Last Christmas, written by Emma Thompson and directed by Paul Feig at the end of 2019.
In 2019, Time magazine also named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
And she’s also doing a spot of voice acting in The Amazing Maurice , an animated film based on Terry Pratchett’s The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, alongside Hugh Laurie, Gemma Arterton, David Thewlis, Himesh Patel and Hugh Bonneville.
Kit Harington
Kit played Jon “You know nothing” Snow over the course of the show’s run.
From 2018 to 2019, Kit Harington appeared at the Vaudeville Theatre in London in the first West End production of the play True West.
He also voiced the character of Eret in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
He will next appear alongside Angelina Jolie and GOT brother Richard Madden in Marvel film Eternals.
Kit married his GOT co-star Rose Leslie in 2018 and they welcomed a son some time after, as they were seen with a baby in February 2021 but have not confirmed any details.
In May 2019, the star checked into a mental health and wellness facility for help with “some personal issues”.
Lena Headey
Lena Headey played the heartless Cersei Lannister on the hit show.
In real life, Lena starred in a movie called Fighting With My Family in 2019 about a female wrestler and was cast in Gunpowder Milkshake as a hit woman who gave up her daughter.
She is also the star of Showtime comedy-drama Rita, in which she plays a teacher and a single mother.
The star will next appear in Netflix anime series Masters of the Universe: Revelation, based on the He-Man franchise, with Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, fellow GoT co-star Liam Cunningham and Alicia Silverstone, among others.
She will also appear in Marvel’s New-Gen: Deadalus Rising, an animated sci-fi series also starring Luke Wilson
Peter Dinklage
Peter played fan-favourite character Tyrion Lannister in the show.
He went straight from Game of Thrones to Marvel, with a starring turn in box-office hit Avengers: Infinity War.
He recently starred in Netflix’s I Care A Lot as a gangster on a mission to rescue his mother from the clutches of a wicked professional legal guardian played by Rosamund Pike.
Peter lent his voice talents to The Angry Bird Movie 2 and The Croods: A New Age.
He’s set to appear in a number of projects including, American Dreamer, Hitpig and Brothers.
Gwendoline Christie
Gwendoline played the heroic and honourable Brienne of Tarth.
Gwendoline Christie appeared in The Personal History of David Copperfield in May 2020 alongside Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie, and Tilda Swinton.
She also played Titania in the 2019 Bridge Theatre stage production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In upcoming projects, she has been cast as Lucifer in Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.
