Kate laughed and explained: “I was sitting at home with a cup of tea then suddenly there was a knock at the door and there was a fanfare.

“I opened the door and there were people with trumpets and a bit like in Cinderella there was a note.

“It was sealed, I opened it up and it was one of the most extraordinary moments of my life.”

Kate continued: “No, it was really sweet. She thanked everybody involved for being involved because it means so much to her. But I’m wondering if that was a secret that I got a note.”

Richard scoffed and said: “Not anymore.”

Wide-eyed Kate added: “Crikey I’ll be in the tower.”

The much-loved presenter then revealed that she also got the chance to meet the royal couple personally prior to the service beginning with her son who is also called William.

She stated: “I was allowed to bring my William, Bill, and he got to meet them as well and he wears a cap all the time.

“It’s sort of like his thing, rarely ever takes it off – even in the bath – baseball cap backwards, very early nineties.

“And when she appeared, she and William appeared, he took it off! And I said to them, ‘Oh my goodness, you’ve made Bill take his cap off.’ So in the presence of royalty, the cap goes.”

Good Morning Britain airs on ITV on weekdays at 6am.
