Carlos Marin, one-quarter of classical crossover group Il Divo, has died in Manchester aged 53.

Born in Germany but raised in Spain, he sang baritone for the group which has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

The news of his death came as the group were touring the UK in December 2021, although recently it had been postponed due to Marin’s illness, despite having been out on stage earlier in the month.

Announcing the news on Twitter, his bandmates Urs Bühler, Sébastien Izambard and David Miller said: “It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marín, has passed away.

“He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There wiIl never be another voice or spirit like Carlos.

“For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend. We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love — David, Sebastien and Urs.”

Prior to linking up with his future band, Marin had appeared in shows such as Les Misérables, Grease and Peter Pan.

As a child he had risen to fame after competing in a number of Spanish shows centred around music which provided the basis for his musical theatre career in the 90s.

From here he sang parts on Disney movies before moving into the band Il Divo following Simon Cowell’s three-year search for the right people for the project. The band is a pop-operatic take on the Three Tenors and was formed back in 2003.

According to the site Celebrity Net Worth, Marin had amassed an impressive £15 million fortune. This comes as little surprise, with the group having released 10 studio albums, conducted world tours and the sale of the 30 million albums.

Il Divo has achieved 160 certified gold and platinum hits across 35 countries and is regarded as a pioneer in the operatic pop genre.

Was Carlos Marin married?

Carlos split from his wife Geraldine Larrosa, a french musician better known by the name Innocence, in 2009. The couple had married in Disneyland California in 2006, and despite only being married for three years are thought to have been together for 13.

Tributes for the singer have poured in from the likes of Simon Cowell and Bruno Tonioli.

Cowell tweeted: “I am finding this so difficult to put into words how I feel right now.

“I am devastated Carlos Marin has passed away. He loved life. He loved performing and always had so much appreciation towards the fans who supported the group from day 1. Rest in peace Carlos. I will miss you.”

What was Carlos Marin’s cause of death?

The cause of Marin’s death is not yet clear, but Spanish media has claimed that he was intubated during his treatment.

The Sun has claimed that Marin fell ill with Covid-19 on December 7 and by the following day was in a serious enough condition to be taken to the Royal Manchester Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma.

It is believed that Carlos Marin was vaccinated against Covid-19.
