ITV's Robert Peston mortified as he forgets Tyrone Mings' name live on air

ITV political editor Robert Peston has apologised after he forgot England defender Tyrone Mings’ name during a live segment on the news.

The 61-year-old turned to Twitter to express his embarrassment at the gaffe and say sorry to the sportsman after the error went out on air during Tuesday’s evening news, reports The Mirror.

Robert Peston, a passionate football fan and lifelong Arsenal supporter, was left kicking himself and admitted on social media his “brain froze”.

After the programme he tweeted: “Just had one of the worst brain freezes ever on @itvnews. I feel an utter moron. Could not remember @OfficialTM_3 Tyrone Mings’ name. I can’t explain it. All I can say is very sorry.”

Peston was reporting on one of the day’s leading stories in which Aston Villa defender Tyrone has issued a scathing response to a Tweet by the Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Following the Euros final on Sunday three young black English players who missed penalties in the shoot-out were subjected to racial abuse on social media.

Despicable tweets aimed at England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka were universally condemned with Priti Patel also tweeting in an attempt to defend the young men.

She wrote: “I am disgusted that @England players who have given so much for our country this summer have been subject to vile racist abuse on social media. It has no place in our country and I back the police to hold those responsible accountable.”

However quoting her tweet, Mr Mings responded: “You don’t get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our anti-racism message as ‘Gesture Politics’ & then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we’re campaigning against, happens.”

Earlier in the tournament Priti Patel told GB News that she thought taking the knee as a stance against racism was “gesture politics” and fans had the right to boo the England players while doing it.

While reporting the day’s story Peston had trouble remembering Mr Mings’ name and needed a helping hand.

When asked how the Government could help tackle the issue, Mr Peston had said: “Well, it’s actually got more complicated for [Boris Johnson] a senior Tory MP Andrew Rosindell, in the last few hours actually weighed in and asked… Sorry, my brain… he did a tweet, didn’t he, I completely forgot his name.”

After being told Mr Mings’ name, he apologised and continued: “And [the tweet] just basically said he wants him to concentrate on football rather than politics which many people say is still insensitive.

“The Prime Minister has got a problem in the run-up to the Euros, lots of his Cabinet colleagues refused to criticise those who were booing.

“People think that that created conditions in which racism could flourish.”
