Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has recalled the heart-warming moment her husband Derek Draper was able to say the words “I love you”.
Talking to Piers Morgan on his last ever episode of Life Stories before she takes over his position, Kate shared her husband’s progress and the current state of his health condition.
Trying to hold back her tears, Kate, 54, told Piers she will “never give up” on Derek after his 13-month battle in hospital with covid.
In the episode which is scheduled to air on ITV on Sunday night, the journalist said: “It’s moments like that which make you realise he is there, and we have had others. He will turn to me and say ‘I love you.’
“He is there, he has fought so hard to stay in this world and I’m not giving up on him, ever.
“He will have moments of clarity, then it’s like he disappears but then he finds a voice.”
Kate and her two children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 12, were left heartbroken when Derek was hospitalised with covid in March 2020.
Along with doctors, the GMB host feared he wouldn’t be able to survive the virus, but Derek has been recovering slowly and returned to the family’s north London home in April, where he has continued his treatment.
Talking frankly about her family’s situation, Kate continued: “It does feel like I have walked through a fiery furnace, or fell down a rabbit hole. The world went dark and I’m still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel.
“Covid has devastated him, from the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his heart, his nervous system.
“We’re pretty sure the inflammation did pass through his brain. Fundamentally he is in a terrible state, but look: he’s alive.”
Piers Morgan’s last ever episode of Life Stories airs on ITV at 8pm on Sunday.
After hosting 103 episodes interviewing the likes of showbusiness legends and politicians, Piers’ next presenting role will be with television channel talkTV – which has been established by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.
Speaking to The Sun about Kate taking over Life Stories, Piers previously said: “I can’t think of anyone who I’d rather finish my run with.
“Kate was a wonderfully loyal colleague during my five years on Good Morning Britain and is one of my favourite people in the world.”
He added: “She’ll be as brilliant at Life Stories as she is at everything else.”
