Kate Garraway has revealed a heartbreaking FaceTime call she had with husband Derek Draper from his hospital bed last year.
The Good Morning Britain presenter explained that Derek, 53, told her he didn’t think he could go on and wanted to die as he battled the effects of long Covid.
Kate told the Mirror: “Derek had been drifting in and out of consciousness and when he said that, it was absolutely devastating, but it showed me he was still in there. Even though it was terrible to think his spirits were so low.”
In a documentary special set to air on Tuesday, Kate will detail the difficult journey she has been on since Derek was hospitalised in March 2020.
Kate Garraway: Finding Derek was filmed last summer – with Kate recently telling Susanna Reid that she had hoped Derek would be back home by the time it aired.
The harrowing FaceTime call will be aired in the documentary.
During the video call, Derek says: “Kate, there’s no way out. There’s no way out.
“I’ve got to the point where I just think f*** it. Just f*** it.”
The ITV regular replies: “As in die?”
Looking tearful Derek then confirms: “Yes… I don’t know how to cope, I don’t know how to cope.”
While Derek is now free from Covid-19, the virus has wreaked havoc on his internal organs.
It’s understood that his kidneys have failed and he has suffered serious damage to his liver and his pancreas.
On top of that, he also is said to have ‘holes is in his heart’.
Kate recently admitted she fears what her husband’s life will be like when he is eventually able to leave hospital.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, she said: “The very worst moment was when they said he could be locked in forever. And I just thought this is a horror story.
“I don’t know if he’ll ever have any kind of life again.
We just don’t know. The change in his body is shocking.”
Derek was placed into a medical coma by doctors to aid his recovery, and was later in a minimal state of consciousness.
Over the past 12 months Kate has had her home renovated ahead of her husband’s home, having ramps fitted, the doors widened for wheelchair access and installing a wet room.
Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs March 23 on ITV at 9pm.
