Notting Hill is a beloved classic that has stood the test of time since it was released 22 years ago.
The film was released in 1999 and became the highest grossing British film released that year.
The movie was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant also receiving nominations for their performances, while the film also earned two BAFTA nominations.
The film tells the story of a romance between a London bookseller and a famous American movie star who happens to walk into his shop.
We take a look at where the cast of the film ended up.
Hugh Grant
Hugh Grant played the lead role of William Thacker, a divorced man who owns an independent bookshop in Notting Hill, London.
The dashing star continued to play heartthrobs after his role in Notting Hill, and went on to star in successful romantic comedies Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001), Two Weeks Notice (2002), Love Actually (2003), Music and Lyrics (2007).
More recently he started in the Gentlemen and TV series The Undoing in 2020, opposite Nicole Kidman.
Despite a 35-year-career in acting, Hugh has repeatedly claimed that acting was not his true calling but rather a career that developed by happenstance.
However in 2020, after moving on to more character roles, he has stated that he “enjoys acting now”.
Julia Roberts
Julia Roberts played Hollywood superstar, Anna Scott, who falls for William, after she meets at his bookshop while filming in London.
She was already one of the highest paid actresses of the 1990s and went on to appear in Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), Mona Lisa Smile (2003), Fireflies in the Garden (2008), Valentine’s Day (2010), Eat Pray Love (2010), August: Osage County (2013), Wonder (2017) and Ben is Back (2018).
Her next role after Anna Scott was as the titular Erin Brockovich, for which she bagged the Oscar for Best Actress in 2000.
She met her current husband Daniel Moder on the set of her film The Mexican in 2000, and they married in 2002.
Together, they have three children: twins, a daughter and a son, born in November 2004, and another son born in June 2007.
Emma Chambers
Emma Chambers played the role of Honey Thacker, William’s sweet and excitable younger sister.
She appeared in only two other films after Notting Hill — the TV movie Bravo Two Zero (1999) and The Clandestine Marriage (1999).
She continued to star in TV series such as family favourite The Vicar of Dibley as well as Take a Girl Like You and Little Robots.
Tragically Emma died of a heart attack on February 21 2018 at the age of 53.
Her character of Alice was written out of the lockdown special episodes of The Vicar of Dibley in 2020, with it being revealed that she had died of cancer.
The final episode paid tribute to her.
Rhys Ifans
Described by William as “the stupidest person in the world, only doubled,” Rhys played the character of Spike, William’s eccentric housemate who hopes to become an artist.
After Notting Hill, the west actor appeared in several huge blockbusters including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (2010), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).
Recently he appeared The King’s Man (2021) and TV series Elementary where he played the brother of Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft.
Rhys has been cast in the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, set to be released in 2022.
Hugh Bonneville
Hugh played Bernie, one of William’s friends who hilariously fails to recognise Anna Scott when they meet.
Since Notting Hill, the actor has appeared in various mainstream and TV films such as Mansfield Park (1999), Madame Bovary (2000), Iris (2001), Conspiracy of Silence (2003), Tsunami: The Aftermath (2006), Shanghai (2010) and Paddington (2014) and its sequel.
However, his most famous role has been that of Robert Crawley in the period drama Downton Abbey which aired from 2010 to 2015, and earned him a Golden Globe nod.
He will next be appearing in the Downton Abbey sequel movie and the third film in the Paddington series.
Tim McInnerny
Tim played Max, William’s friend and Bella’s husband who hosts the birthday dinner for Honey, where they all meet Anna for the first time.
The actor has appeared in films such as 102 Dalmatians (2000), Casanova (2005), Black Death (2010) and Automata (2014).
Tim’s TV stints include Doctor Who (2008) Midsomer Murders (2010) Law & Order: UK (2011) Outlander (2014) and Strike Back: Legacy (2015).
He joined the smash hit TV show Game of Thrones as Lord Robett Glover in 2016.
More recently Tim appeared in 2021 BBC/ Netflix drama The Serpent.
Gina McKee
Gina portrayed the character of Bella, Max’s wheelchair-bound wife.
She is described in the film as “one of the only two women that he [William] has ever loved.”
After Notting Hill, Gina starred in Women Talking Dirty (1999), Burning the Bed (2003), Mirrormask (2005), The Lavender List (2006), Atonement (2007), The Loop (2009) Jimmy P (2013) and Phantom Thread (2017).
She has been a part of several television shows such as Waking the Dead, Hebburn and By Any Means.
She also appeared in the highly successful BBC /Netflix drama series Bodyguard, playing the character of Commander Anne Sampson.
Gina will next star in the upcoming Harry Styles film, My Policeman alongside The Crown actress, Emma Corrin.
