Piers Morgan's Meghan Markle rant sparks Ofcom probe after 41,000 complaints

Ofcom has launched an investigation after it received more than 41,000 complaints about comments made by Piers Morgan on ITV’s Good Morning Britain.

The complaints came after Piers made controversial comments about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Following Piers remarks, ITV bosses are reportedly ‘dealing with Piers Morgan’ but the channel also reportedly argued that the show has been ‘balanced’.

However now it has been hit with over 41,000 complaints made to Ofcom.

An Ofcom spokesperson took to its official Twitter account to confirm it is “investigating” Monday’s episode of GMB.

The statement read: “We have launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain under our harm and offence rules.

“As of 14:00 on Tuesday 9 March, we have received 41,015 complaints about the programme.”

Twitter users immediately rushed reply to the statement – and the reaction was extremely mixed.

One user wrote back in response: “You should launch an investigation into the most divisive, damaging and disrespectful individual in the U.K. media, Piers Morgan. Clean out the cesspit!”

Another said: “I’m not surprised. When someone has no scruples and throws a tantrum like a 5 year old child that’s what happens.

“The dismissal of someone else’s experience with depression/ST is heinous behaviour from a man who is on tv screens on the daily. He needs to work on his decorum.”

“Well hopefully you remove piers permantely from gmb because of those complaints,” tweeted another.

However some of Piers fans rushed to defend him.

“@piersmorgan storming off this morning is tv gold, i love this guy and the debates on @GMB.” Said one.

Another tweeted: “I love you piers. You speak the unspeakable.”

It comes after GMB’s weatherman Alex Beresford confronted Piers over his treatment of Meghan Markle on Tuesday’s show, leading the host to walk off set.

Alex, who previously spoke out against Piers’ treatment of Meghan Markle over Twitter, voiced his concerns about the presenter’s language on the show.

Referring to Meghan Markle, the weatherman said: “I understand that you do not like Meghan Markle and you have made it clear so many times – so many times on this programme.

“And I understand you had a personal relationship with Meghan Markle and she cut you off. She is entitled to cut you off if she wants to.

“Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? Now, I do not think she has. But yet you continue to trash her.”

Piers, who had been biting his lip up until this point, suddenly climbed out of his seat and stormed out of the studio, refusing to engage in the conversation.
