Prince Harry has taken a veiled swipe at the UK as he says living in America leaves him “feeling free”.
Harry sat down with Armchair Expert podcast host Dax Shepard to discuss mental health, his time in the military and his stepping back from Royal duties after he and wife Meghan Markle moved from London to Santa Barbara, California.
And it appears he and his wife are loving their new life with son Archie, after detailing how he and Meghan had to hide their relationship back in London.
Speaking about how he covertly met up with Meghan in a UK supermarket, Harry said: “The first time Meghan and I met up for her to come and stay with me, we met up in a supermarket in London, pretending we didn’t know each other.
“We were texting from [opposite] sides of the shop, and there were people looking at me and giving me weird looks.”
He said that the “beauty” of life in America was that he finally felt “free.”
“Living here now I can actually lift my head and actually I feel different, my shoulders have dropped, so have [Meghan’s], you can walk around feeling a little bit more free,” Harry said.
“I can take Archie on the back of my bicycle. I never had the chance to do that.”
He joked: “Now that I’ve said that [paparazzi] are probably going to be there – but I would never have had the chance to do that [at home].”
But life in the US wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows either, as he and Meghan were constantly hounded by the press.
“Every time we came out we got pounced on, there was very rarely a day gone by without a paparazzi jumping out,” he explained.
“Living in LA – it’s a feeding frenzy. We spent the first eight months living at [actor] Tyler Perry’s house, and the helicopters, the drones, the paparazzi climbing the fence – it was madness.
“People were like: ‘What did you expect if you live in LA?’
“Okay well first of all we didn’t mean to live in LA – it was a staging area before we tried to find our house. And secondly, how sad that if you live in LA and you’re a well known figure you just have to accept it?” Harry asked.
“The first lot of security we had, I said: ‘Where’s the safest place?’ and they said ‘Inside’.
