Strictly Come Dancing pro Gorka Marquez returned to Instagram to put to bed any rumours that he might have been raced to hospital due to Covid-19.
The 31-year-old thanked fans for their concern after he’d spent 24 hours in hospital – but also wanted to alert his followers that it was nothing to do with the coronavirus.
Setting the record straight on Instagram, the BBC dancer revealed he’d suffered from Rhabdomyolysis.
The illness causes the breakdown of muscle tissue that leads to the release of muscle fibre contents into the blood – which could have affected his kidneys if gone untreated.
As Gorka’s enzymes levels had been “very high” his kidneys could have stopped working.
He wrote: “Thank you, to everyone for the lovely messages. Just to clarify, I didn’t have Covid or nothing related to Covid vaccinations.
“I had rhabdomyolysis condition in which damaged skeletal muscle breaks down rapidly.
“Which lead to my CK enzyme levels to be very high and that could lead to me kidneys stop working.
“So had to get it treated.”
Earlier this week, Hollyoaks star Gemma Atkinson’s husband-to-be explained on social media that he’d had an “interesting 24 hours”.
Along with the caption, he shared a picture of himself rigged up to a cannula from his hospital bed.
Making light of the situation, Gorka joked that his future wife had accused him of trying hard to get out of wrapping presents this year.
Later, Gorka returned to confirm to fans that he had been sent home and was reunited with his daughter Mia.
He signed off his post explaining that the Fairfield Hospital had been “so nice” to him as he paid thanks for their support.
Beneath the post, fans filled the comments section with their get well wishes.
Katya Jones, Gorka’s co-star, was quick to chime: “Oh no! Get better soon Gorks.”
“Get well soon Gorks,” added professional dancer Amy Dowden.
Australian pro Dianne Buswell wrote: “Hope you’re feeling better soon Gorks xx.”
