Actress Suranne Jones was left covered in bruises and suffering from painful whiplash after performing daredevil stunts for her new TV drama.
The Doctor Foster star, who celebrates her 43rd birthday later this month, plays DCI Amy Silva, a police officer investigating a mysterious death on a Royal Navy vessel in the BBC Sunday night drama.
But the daredevils stunts have taken a physical toll on her body as Suranne told how she was left ‘hobbling home’ following a day of filming the physically demanding role.
She told The Sun: “I forgot how old I was. I thought I was 23 when I was reading it, and that’s not true any more.
“So I had to do a lot of working out just to build up my strength in order to do those scenes.
“I got whiplash, I put my back out a couple of times and I was covered in bruises.
Every time I went home, my husband was like, ‘What the hell have they done to you now?’
Suranne added: “But it was fun to do and I watch the finished series and go, “Oh, Amy’s great!” But I was hobbling home and having Epsom salt baths during filming.”
And the former Coronation Street star admitted filming in cramped conditions to replicate the interior of a submarine was also no easy feat.
She said: “It was claustrophobic. There’s a great scene where Amy tries to get in her bunk.
“I’m quite tall and not of small build, and the director was like, ‘Can you get up there a little more gracefully?’ But I just couldn’t do it, because they’re so small.”
The 5ft7in actress also revealed she has suffered with mental health issues in the past, which allowed her to relate to her character’s battles with anxiety and depression.
She explained that ‘my life research’ was ‘enough’ to help her relate to Amy’s situation and really immerse herself in the role.
The six-part series will air later this year and also stars Game Of Thrones actor Rose Leslie as Jones’s police colleague and lover. The series follows their complicated relationship as they investigate the death of a naval sailor.
