Taylor Swift wins BRIT Awards Global Icon award ahead of 2021 ceremony

Taylor Swift is set to be honoured at this week’s BRIT Awards.

The I Did Something Bad songstress will be awarded the prestigious Global Icon award for her record breaking career in music.

Taylor becomes the first female artist to become a recipient with previous winners being Elton John, Robbie Williams and David Bowie.

During the pandemic alone Taylor, 31, released two albums.

First in July she dropped Folklore in July before surprise releasing Evermore in December.

Earlier this year Folklore was named Album of the Year at a stripped back Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

Taylor made UK chart history in April after bagging her third number one album in a single year.

The feat has surpassed a record of two previously held by The Beatles.

Following the success of Folklore and Evermore, Taylor topped the UK charts with a re-recorded version of her album Fearless.

The original version of the album peaked at number five in 2008.

As Daily Star revealed in February this year, the 2021 BRITS will have a live indoor audience – despite the ongoing coronavirus restrictions still being in place until next month.

BRIT Awards bosses teamed up with the government to a vaccine passport style method of enhanced testing and tracing for a reduced crowd.

The scheme is part of a series of pilot projects undertaken by the government before the UK fully unlocks on June 21.

As a special thanks to the hard work of those on the frontline, the majority of tickets went to those working in the NHS.

Once again, comedian Jack Whitehall will host the celeb-filled event.

Meanwhile, there are set to be special performances from Coldplay, Dua Lipa, Griff and US superstar The Weeknd.

During the evening Little Mix are also nominated for Best Group – it will be the first time the X Factor winning band will have attended the awards as a three piece after Jesy Nelson decided to quit following a decade with the girls.

Chief Executive of the BRIT Awards Geoff Taylor said in a statement: “This year’s BRIT Awards with Mastercard is one of the most significant in the show’s history.

“Not only will we be celebrating the brilliant music and artists that have helped us through the pandemic, but we hope it will provide a path for the return of live music that fans and artists have so sorely missed.”
