Teen flick Princess Diaries is a Hollywood comedy romance directed by the late Gary Marshall for Disney.
Gary Marshall also directed the sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which came out in 2004, and he was the director behind Pretty Woman (1990) and Chicken Little (2005).
The original Princess Diaries followed the life of awkward teen, Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), who finds out that she’s the heir to a throne in the European kingdom of Genovia.
Mia tries to prove to her grandmother Clarisse (Julie Andrews) that she’s worthy of the huge responsibility, while juggling the highs and lows of high school.
Two decades later, some of the cast have gone on to win acclaimed awards, battle depression, face criticism about coming out, go from acting to working in sales, and much more.
So, what are they up to now?
Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway’s breakout role was in The Princess Diaries.
Since then she’s gone on to star in blockbusters like The Devil Wears Prada (2006), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Les Miserablés (2012), a role that won her several awards, including an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.
Anne is still acting. In 2020, she starred in the live-action remake of Roald Dahl’s Witches.
Her most recent film Locked Down was released in January, starring alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor in the comedy heist.
Anne has said that she’d love to star in another Princess Diaries film.
Dame Julie Andrews
Dame Julie Andrews plays Mia’s royal grandmother in the 2001 film but she had been acting way before then.
Starring in The Sound of Music (1965) and as Mary in Mary Poppins (1964), Julie’s career spans decades.
In 2019, Dame Julie opened up about spiralling into a depression after a poor vocal chord operation in 1997 resulted in her losing her renowned soprano singing voice.
However, now she’s in better spirits and is working on her podcast, Julie’s Library, alongside her daughter Emma Walter Hamilton, reading children’s books to kids.
Eager-eared Bridgerton fans might have noticed Dame Julie’s iconic voice too.
The actor voices Lady Whistledown’s narrations.
Erik Von Detten
Erik starred as Mia’s blond-haired heartthrob love interest, Josh.
His career has taken an unconventional turn as he now works in sales and has been since he was 25.
Describing Hollywood as “fickle”, he told E! Online: “The fickle nature of employment as an actor just wasn’t consistent enough for me.”
However, he joked that his fame sometimes brings in business for his partner’s company, so it’s a win.
Mandy Moore
Mandy Moore’s breakout role was also in The Princess Diaries where she starred as the school bully, Lana.
In recent years, Mandy has been juggling a singing career, having released a number of albums as well as small TV roles like Grey’s Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother.
More recently, she has had a lead role in the popular series, This Is Us.
Heather Matarazzo
Mia’s best friend Lilly was played by Heather Matarazzo, who had featured in films like Welcome to The Doll House and Scream, before The Princess Diaries.
Heather has been vocal about how when she made the decision to come out as a lesbian, she was advised not to by people in the industry.
She’s also talked about difficulties booking acting roles and feeling down about all the rejections.
Heather is set to star in the new Scream movie coming out in 2022.
Hector Elizondo
Hector, 84, played Joe, who was Clarisse’s head of security turned love interest.
Just like Anne Hathaway, Hector would love for a third Princess Diaries, but with a female director.
The actor is currently in American sitcom, Last Man Standing.
Away from his professional life, Hector has suffered some tragedy, as his son Rodd died in 2017 at the age of 60.
Sandra Oh
You might recognise Sandra Oh, 49, as Vice Principle Geraldine Gupta.
Even though the film has been out for two whole decades, the actor revealed that she still hasn’t seen it.
It’s probably because she’s been too busy taking on award-winning roles like Eve Polastri in Killing Eve and voice acting in Over the Moon.
Before landing her role in Killing Eve, Sandra was best known as Cristina Yang in Grey’s Anatomy.
She’s won countless awards, including SAG Awards and two Golden Globes, as well as many others.
Caroline Goodall
Mia’s mother, Helen Thermopolis O’Connell, was played by actress Caroline Goodall, 61.
The actor has also had a lengthy career spanning decades, starring in films like Hook (1991) and The Dressmaker (2015).
Although these days Caroline is producing, she’s recently had small roles, such as in The Crown in which she played Lady Doris, a friend of the Queen Mother.
Robert Schwartzman
Robert starred as Michael Moscovitz, who was Lilly’s brother and Mia’s crush.
Outside of acting, he was also in a band called Rooney and was unable to star in The Princess Diaries sequel because they were touring.
Just like Anne and Hector, Robert would be up for another Princess Diaries film and he feels “fortunate” about being in a film with such “longevity”.
