Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis have reunited to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of thier hit movie Thelma & Louise.
The Hollywood legends, who starred in the 1991 cult classic together, attended a special drive-in charity screening of the film in Los Angeles and to make the occasion extra special, they recreated one of the movie’s most iconic final scenes – the kiss before they accelerate over the Grand Canyon.
But 30 years on Susan, 74, and Geena, 65, look barely a day older.
Both women were nominated for Best Actress gongs at the Academy Awards and the film is seen as a major feminist milestone.
What starts out as an innocent road trip turns into an intense fugitive situation very quickly.
Geena plays a ditzy housewife called Thelma who is married to an obnoxious bully and Susan plays her best friend, a wise-cracking waitress called Louise.
The holiday turns sour when Thelma runs into some trouble with a man they meet along on the way and Louise shoots him dead.
After going on the run the film culminates in the plucky pair on a cliff edge at the Grand Canyon – do they surrender or keep going?
Before they make the final decision they share a sisterly kiss.
The film, which was directed by Ridley Scott, also made a star out of Brad Pitt. The then 26-year-old Brad plays a hunky drifter with who Thelma has a liaison.
Screenwriter Callie Khouri, who won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for the movie, also attended the special event.
In a Q&A before the screening, Geena said: “What was so striking was the intense reaction to the film. Thelma and Louise end up driving off a cliff, and still viewers felt exhilarated by their story.
“It made me realise how few opportunities we give women to come out of a movie feeling inspired and empowered by the female characters. It changed everything about how I chose roles moving forward.”
Genna has been married four times, most famously to Jeff Goldblum and has three children. Susan also has three children and is currently single. In 2006 she travelled to the UK to trace her Welsh genealogy in the show Coming Home: Susan Sarandon.
