Superstar Adele has made a shocking swipe at the BRIT Awards’ new gender-free category change, blasting: “I’m proud to be a woman.”
The Hello songstress slated the new format during her gushing thank you speech, claiming that while she “understands” the change, she is still very proud to represent her gender.
As the star wrapped up her acceptance speech, she said: “And also, I understand why the name of this award has changed but I really love being a woman and being a female artist, I do, I’m really proud of us, I really am, thank you so much.”
Fans took to Twitter to react to the controversial comments.
“Female it’s not a dirty word the Brits and other award shows need to start using it again. Females we exist,” said one viewer.
A second gushed: “Yes Adele! Slay Queen,” followed by a heart emoji.
During the speech the 33-year-old star also paid tribute to her fellow artists, gushing: “I genuinely can’t believe it’s my job.
“Oh thank you so much, this is amazing. I actually wasn’t expecting this one at all. I want to say a massive congrats to Little Simz, I think you’re absolutely… [expletive] Dave, Ed, Sam, I’m so proud to be in your category.”
She continued: “I love being an artist and I genuinely can’t believe it’s my job and real artistry, I know I’ve spoken about it before, England, the UK, we have so many incredible new artists coming up and never lose sight of who you are, the reason believe in you is something you have in you, never let go of that, ever.”
The speech was her third appearance of the night on the BRITs stage, the first coming when she accepted the Song of the Year award for Easy on Me, one of four for which she is nominated.
Accompanied by boyfriend Rich Paul, the stunning star, who wore a beautiful long black gown, noted the large number of nominees for the category, saying: “I can’t believe a piano ballad won against all those bangers!”
She kept things relatively straightforward, performing I Drink Wine while seated in front of a giant gold curtain, accompanied by an understated four-piece band and three singers.
The now divorced mum-of-one sparked engagement rumours when she appeared at the ritzy event wearing an enormous, hard-to-miss, pear-shaped diamond ring on her left ring finger.
One person tweeted, “Wait a damn minute. Is @adele engaged? If so congratulations,” while another wrote, “Ermm… Did Adele just casually let the world know she’s engaged to Rich Paul by wearing this WHOPPER teardrop diamond ring at the #Brits?!!”
