BBC Breakfast star insulted as 'rude' crew member says her head 'looks like a mushroom'

BBC Breakfast star Katherine Downes was left insulted during her Winter Olympics coverage, as a crew member likened her head to a ‘mushroom’.

The star, who sometimes steps in for Sally Nugent or Naga Munchetty on the red sofa, was presenting her daily sports segment from Beijing – but a question from Naga left her reeling.

Katherine looked cosy despite the wintery chill settling over the mountains, rocking a thick black waterproof jacket and brown-and-beige bobble hat while clutching her bright yellow BBC Sport microphone.

Her wavy brunette tresses were just visible underneath the chunky woollen hat, which looked like it was doing a good job at keeping the cold out.

It all kicked off, though, as Naga wondered: “Impressive bobble hat! How many have you got, and are you all [presenters] having a bobble hat off?”

Katherine admitted: “Well I went to PyeongChang four years ago with two bobble hats, and that was a mistake. Because it turns out you’re on TV every single day and you want a bit of variety!”

She went on to explain: “So I’ve brought seven bobble hats with me out to Beijing. And do you know what – I love them!”

Things weren’t all smooth sailing, however, as the star added: “But my sound man here, Graham, he’s very rude about my bobble hat.

“He says it makes me look like my head is the shape of a mushroom. But I’m loving them, it’s freezing out here!”

Keen to reassure Katherine, Naga’s co-host Jon Kay told her: “I’m a fan of that one, actually! And unlike [the others] you’re not going for the bobble hat and scarf combo? Interesting – just going for it with the bobble hat.”

Naga, however, scolded Katherine: “Raise your game, Ms Downes – raise your game!”

Jon then suggested: “They could swap bobble hats, couldn’t they?”

But sports presenter Mike Bushell reminded him: “Well, that wouldn’t be… Covid rules?” – leaving Jon red-faced.

Keen to move the conversation swiftly on, Naga turned the topic to the weather with a smooth segue to presenter Carol Kirkwood, announcing: “I tell you what, it’s bobble hat weather! Bobble hats, thermals, scarves. Too windy for an umbrella!”

Carol quickly joked: “Well, your bobble hat might end up in Stavanger [Norway] if you have it on today!”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
