The Cheeky Girls are back and cheekier than ever with a brand-new single, 20 years after they rocketed to fame in 2002 when they auditioned for Popstars: The Rivals.
The duo are best known for their pop single The Cheeky Song (Touch My Bum).
The twins, Monica and Gabriela Irimia, 39, who originate from Transylvania, Romania, have announced that they are releasing a new single, called Let’s Have Fun.
They made the announcement on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon (19 April). Their new track, Let’s Have Fun, was written by their mother, Margit. Their mum also wrote The Cheeky Song, and was the duo’s manager while they appeared on the ITV show.
The girls wrote on Instagram: “Hi Guyz, please check out our new song.. It is released on all platforms Let’s Have Fun…XX”
In keeping with their cheeky style, the girls sing the lyrics to their new song on Instagram: “We just want to have fun, cheeky-cheeky. Two of us is better than one mm-mm. We just want to have twice as much fun, two of us is better than one.”
The pair appeared on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch recently, where they celebrated their 20 year anniversary of their audition on Popstars: The Rivals and the release of their first single.
Speaking on the show, sister Gabriela said: “This is to celebrate the 20-year anniversary, it is called Let’s Have Fun, of course, The Cheeky Girls are all about fun. It’s to celebrate life and just be happy!”
Since the pair had their hit single in the early 2000s, they went on to have three more top hits from between 2002 and 2004 with The Cheeky Song selling 1.2 million copies.
Unfortunately, the girls suffered health issues, heartbreak and even bankruptcy, currently working very normal jobs and leading very normal lives, both sisters working in separate Hyundai car dealerships in York and Lincolnshire.
In the height of their pop stardom, the girls tragically both developed eating disorders, both weighing just six and a half stone, and while they have recovered, they both have been left with digestive issues from the damage that the eating disorders caused.
