Bez is so worried he could be killed on Dancing On Ice that he has asked his girlfriend to marry him – but he has shared his upcoming wedding will be a drug-free affair.
It comes as singer Firouzeh Razavi told him: “You can’t fall on your head because you could die.”
Accident-prone Happy Mondays star Bez is the first contestant in the skating show’s history to be given a helmet. And he suffered a scare earlier this week when he fell on the ice and banged his head.
But he insists he will survive the show so he can walk down the aisle with his fiancée in September.
Worried Firouzeh, 35, said: “When he told me he fell and whacked his head, I was like, ‘Oh no, that is not good at all’. I do worry and I always say, ‘Whatever you do, protect your head, you can’t fall on your head because you could die’.
“I tell him if you are going to fall, fall forward on to your knees. But I don’t want to attract negative energy, we are a lucky couple and good things are going to come. We are getting married.”
After 10 years together, Bez proposed to Firouzeh on the top of Mount Skirrid in Wales, close to their Hereford home. After consulting Firouzeh’s sisters, he arranged a romantic proposal with a picnic and balloons.
In his first interview about the proposal Bez said: “She was in so much shock she forgot to respond so, I said, ‘Are you gonna say yes or what?’.”
Laughing, Firouzeh added “It was amazing, I couldn’t believe it. It was a special mountain as we like to go up there with his family. He always said he wasn’t a romantic but turns out he is. That’s what true love does to you.”
The pair will walk down the aisle at their local church with Bez’s bandmate Shaun Ryder as best man. Their first dance will be to David Bowie’s Absolute Beginners, but Bez won’t be bringing out his famous maracas.
He joked: “I will save them for the bedroom.”
He added: “I said to Firou, ‘You do whatever you want with the wedding planning and I’ll just turn up and marry you’.”
Despite his rock and roll lifestyle there won’t be any drug-taking at the bash.
Bez admitted: “I actually enjoy being straight these days. I’ve done all that as a younger man.
“It makes life easier when you don’t have a bad monkey on your back.”
The past three months have been spent training for Dancing On Ice and his juice mixer has been his constant companion. And he insisted Firouzeh doesn’t have to worry about him running off with his dance partner – something which has previously plagued other couples in the competition.
Bez will be taking part with Scottish pro skater Angela Egan. He said: “Angela is great. I can see why people would find love on the show, the girls are very attractive, but it’s not the case with me and Angela, we have got a genuine friendship without any sexual tension.”
And he added: “At 57 I’ve lost the libido where you want to s**g everyone in the room. It’s a good thing, Firou’s got me at my best.”
