EastEnders fans confused by Walford family tree as Whitney attends Dot's funeral

EastEnders fans have been left confused by Whitney Dean’s appearance at Dot Cotton’s funeral, wondering how the two were related.

Viewers and the cast have been in mourning after Dot’s death was announced, following June Brown’s passing in April of this year.

In the funeral episode, which followed Dot’s off-screen death, Albert Square residents gathered to pay their respects, with the likes of Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) and Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) at the graveside.

However Whitney (Shona McGarty) was also with the mourners, which left some viewers confused as she wasn’t related to Dot.

They shared their confusion on Twitter before someone kindly explained the situation to them.

One said: “How is Whitney related to Dot?”

Another wrote: “I didn’t know they had that much to do with each other, so that final scene from today’s episode has really confused me.”

A third added: “Not sure why Whitney is there? Have I missed a family connection somewhere?”

And someone else tweeted: “Whitney’s relation to Dot? Long lost dog sitter? I am confused as to why she is there.”

Soon, one explained: “Whitney is Bianca’s step-daughter, Bianca’s mum is Carol and Jim was her dad and obviously Jim was married to Dot. So Whitney is kind of a great-step-daughter.”

EastEnders fans had been wondering how June Brown’s death would be explained by the soap, as her character Dot was just away from Walford.

June died in April of this year at the age of 95 and had portrayed Dot since 1985.

She left the BBC soap in 1993 but returned four years later in 1997, where she stayed until 2020 when the character relocated to Ireland.

Recently on the soap, Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) received the news that her grandmother dot had died and that the funeral was being organised.

And Natalie said filming the scenes was “upsetting”, telling the Sun that she was “very, very close to June”.

June and Dot were both such iconic parts of EastEnders that her real life children were involved in the funeral, appearing on-screen.
