EastEnders fans were gobsmacked as they watched Kat Slater propose to Phil Mitchell days before he went to prison for life.
During Thursday’s instalment of the popular BBC One soap, viewers complained of whiplash as the former power couple got back together before the London gangster settles into life behind bars.
The doting dad has a number of charges stacked against him that could potentially see him living out the remainder of his life from a prison cell.
Over the years, he has been involved in the murder of Vincent, kidnapped his son Raymond in addition to organising a number of shady deals under the tables of his various businesses.
But as the heartbroken couple prepare to be separated once more, the former barman confessed that the only reason he decided to call things off with Kat was so that she could move on quickly after he was arrested.
He said: “The soon I can let you go the sooner you can move on. There is no happy ending for me and you, there is no wedding bells.”
Still madly in love with her complicated partner, the raven-haired beauty decided to throw caution to the win and got down on one knee as she gave an emotional proposal to Phil.
“It could be if you marry me. Come on, let me show you how wrong you are – marry me,” she said as she got down on one knee.
She continued: “Phillip James Mitchell, you are a stubborn, messy grumpy old git and a terrible cook.
“But no one has ever stood up for me or looked after me like you have. Will you be my husband?”
And fans of the show soon swarmed to Twitter to share their thoughts on their upcoming whirlwind wedding online.
One user penned: “I know Phil and Kat divide people, but I just adore Steve and Jessie working together #EastEnders.”
Another added: “Kat asking Phil to marry her in the most Slater way possible [three cry laughing emojis] #EastEnders.”
A third gushed: “I adore Kat and Phil together tbh [heart emoji] #eastenders” as another chimed in with: “I’m so happy for Kat and Phil #eastenders.”
Whereas some viewers weren’t as excited for the pair to say ‘I do’ as fans of the show argued that their relationship would never work.
One user argued: “Need a Kat/ Phil split within the next 24 hours please and thank you #EastEnders.”
Another agreed: “#EastEnders Kat and Phil just don’t work as a couple. Zero chemistry. Bored of it.”
A third reminded viewers: “Kat does remember Phil going down for life? Unless Phil takes the deal. #EastEnders.”
