George Michael 'having last laugh' over Barry Manilow's Last Christmas lawsuit

George Michael “can’t believe” Barry Manilow tried to sue him over his hit song back in the 80s, according to celebrity psychic Jasmine Rose Anderson.

Jasmine spoke exclusively to Daily Star about George’s feelings towards his fellow pop icon after Barry attempted to sue for plagiarism.

Anderson explained: “It’s water under the bridge and he says what is important was that he did what he believed to be the right thing in the end.”

She continued: “He still can’t believe it happened. In the end, he didn’t like holding onto negativity or drama and has moved on. ‘Holding onto the past brings you down,’ he says, but he was annoyed about it. It’s all good – he’s having the last laugh now.”

Manilow reckoned that Last Christmas sounded very similar to his own single Can’t Smile Without You, released in 1978.

It was claimed that the lawsuit was dropped as all royalties from the song were going to charity, whereas Michael’s engineer Chris Porter told The Guardian that it was “thrown out” as “60-odd songs from the past century had a comparable chord sequence and melody”.

Michael’s iconic Christmas hit was released almost four decades ago, but only managed to reach the number one spot back in 2021.

Although George didn’t get to see this milestone during his lifetime, Jasmine has revealed that he is glad it is all over.

She said: “He is still seeing it now, spirit side, and feels overwhelming love and gratitude for his fans and those who supported him. His only regret is that he can’t be down here celebrating with the people he loved.”

George is also ever hopeful that his classic single will top the charts once again this year.

Anderson explained: “He says: ‘Never say never.’ It would give him great joy to see it there again.”

The 80s tune was the inspiration for the 2019 film Last Christmas, starring Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson.

It was pitched to George before he died in 2016 and insisted that Emma have a part in the movie – a performance which he was “bowled over by” as her “talent never fails to miss the mark”.

Jasmine says that when he was initially informed about the film, he felt “surprise and joy”.

“He felt very humbled and touched that a movie would be made based on his song. There is no bigger compliment in his opinion […] We have to appreciate that our lives are short and fragile in the grand scheme of things. He is saying: ‘Spend it with the people you love’.”
