Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has spoken about the toll that caring for her husband Derek Draper is taking on their relationship.
During Wednesday’s episode (April 6) of the BBC series Your Body Uncovered, Kate detailed how his ongoing battle with Covid had put a strain on their relationship.
Kate was joined by Paul, a guest, on the show, who had a stroke three years ago and now experiences symptoms including neuro-fatigue, which produces an overwhelming feeling of tiredness, making everyday activities extremely difficult.
Kate explained: ‘When something is neurological, it’s not just caring for the physical problem, it affects the relationship as well’.
The 54-year-old presenter chatted to Paul’s wife Lynn, who explained to the broadcaster that she was going through a similar struggle to Kate and Derek.
Lynn opened up to Kate, saying: ‘And you don’t know how it is going the affect the non-affected person, as it was, because you’re still the same and they might not know how different they might be’.
Kate agreed that there is a “loss” for both sides of the relationship explaining: ‘There’s a loss I think, there’s a loss for them in the fact that they’ve changed in some way, but there’s a loss that you have to adjust to as well, as a partner’.
Derek, also 54, returned home from the hospital in April 2021 after a year-long battle with Covid. He still needs round-the-clock care.
Kate also spoke on Derek’s condition during Wednesday morning’s Good Morning Britain, while interviewing The Bill star Chris Ellison, who has been diagnosed with the speech-debilitating condition aphasia.
Aphasia affects cognitive abilities. Bruce Willis recently announced his retirement from acting after being diagnosed with the illness.
Your Body Uncovered with Kate Garraway is available on BBC iPlayer.
