Musician and actor Dyfrig 'Topper' Evans has died aged 43 as tributes pour in

Actor and musician Dyfrig Evans has sadly died as tributes pour in for the Welsh star.

Dyfrig passed away at the age of 43 following a period of illness.

He was an original cast member of S4C’s children’s soap opera Rownd a Rownd and the lead singer of the band Topper.

The Welsh star, who’s known by many as “Dyfrig Topper”, also appeared in S4C dramas including Talcen Caled and as Kevin in Darren Drws Nesa from 2017 to 2018.

Tributes have poured in for the talented actor and musician.

Super Furry Animals’ vocalist Gruff Rhys dubbed the news “sad and shocking” and comedian Elis James called the death of Mr Evans, “a huge loss”.

Sharing his upset, Elis wrote: “So sad to hear of Dyfrig Evans.

“Topper were one of my favourite bands during a great period for music.

“I had the privilege of meeting him a couple of times, a talented, wonderful, beautiful man.”

S4C’s chief content officer, Llinos Griffin-Williams, said: “Dyfrig’s talent spanned beloved characters for our children’s content and more subversive characters for series like Talcen Caled.”

Dyfrig is believed to have died on Thursday (May 25)

Dyfrig’s band Topper formed under the name Paladr in 1992 before changing their name in 1996.

The band split in 2001 but the Welsh star continued to perform as a solo artist.

In 2019, he came third in the Song for Wales competition with the song LOL.

In S4C’s children’s soap opera Rownd a Rownd, Dyfrig played the pupil Arwel Jones.

During an interview to mark the 21st anniversary of the series, he said being part of the show had been a dream.

One tribute read: “The Welsh rock scene is quieter today – his spirit will live on”

In 2002, he joined the cast of Talcen Caled as the character Huw Williams.

He was also part of the Emyn Roc a Roll series, playing the character Eryl, a member of the band and one of the main characters.

The actor also appeared in series such as Tipyn o Stad, Gwlad yr Astra Gwyn and Gwyll. Between 2017 and 2018, he portrayed Kevin in two series of Darren Drws Nesa.

Dyfrig leaves his children and wife Elaine.
