Former Splash star and politician Penny Mordaunt has made history as she proclaimed King Charles III as the new monarch.
A ceremony was held at St James Palace today (September 10, 2022), to formally confirm King Charles III’s succession from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who died on September 8, at the age of 96.
The service was overseen by the Accession Council, issuing eight orders which are traditionally ensured before King Charles made his declaration.

After being appointed Commons Leader and Lord President of the Privy Council by Prime Minister Liz Truss earlier this week, politician Penny also led the proclamation ceremony.

However, members of the public took to social media following the ceremony, to comment that the politician was also the first reality TV star to proclaim a new monarch too, following her appearance on ITV programme The Splash.
Penny appeared on the programme in 2014, which saw her and fellow celebrities train to complete professional dives, with the competition presented by Vernon Kaye and Gabby Logan.
Remembering her appearance on The Splash, one Twitter user said: “Penny Mordaunt is the first contestant from ITV’s SPLASH! to proclaim a new monarch. Another win for ITV’s SPLASH! this week.”

“BREAKING: Penny Mordaunt becomes the first Splash! contestant to preside over the accession of a monarch,” commented a second.
A third added: “Absolutely peak UK that a contestant on Splash is now in charge officiating our new King.”
Speaking about the ceremony, a fourth said: “That was quite something to watch. History being made. Televised for the first time. And led by a former Splash! contestant.”

King Charles III’s proclamation as the new monarch followed his speech to the nation last night (September 9), where he addressed changes that were taking place in the palace, including new titles for William and Kate as the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The King also reflected on the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, saying: “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother.
“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
