Scouting For Girls star red-faced after awkward Top Of The Pops blunder

Scouting For Girls star Roy Stride has revealed he and his bandmates pulled the ultimate prank on their drummer Pete during an appearance on Top Of The Pops.

The popular Indie band appeared on the BBC programme back in 2010 as part of the Christmas Special, performing their hit single This Ain’t A Love Song.

However, Roy revealed during an exclusive chat with the Daily Star that not everything went to plan for the band as they played a trick on Pete, leaving him completely red-faced.

Ahead of their performance, Roy and Greg Churchouse told Pete Ellard that they had planned to dress up as Father Christmas – but this was not the case.

He said: “We were on the Christmas special and it was only because This Ain’t A Love Song was such a big song.

“The best thing about it being the Christmas special, we all told Pete we were dressing up as Father Christmas and he rocks up and he’s got no other clothes apart from the Father Christmas suit.

“We weren’t going to dress as Father Christmas, it’s on YouTube, he’s there as Father Christmas with a beard and we’re all dressed normally.”

Roy added: “The thing that annoys him, he can’t even tell his kids he’s been on Top Of The Pops because it doesn’t even like him, that’s my crowning achievement of the whole thing.

“That’s my proudest moment.”

But while the once almighty programme airs just twice a year now at Christmas and New Year, Roy believes it’s a “shame” that the programme isn’t a weekly show anymore.

“I’m sure they could do that now because it’s not an expensive thing to do,” he said before adding: “You could do that now across YouTube and the [BBC] iPlayer, I think there’s a real audience for that, I do miss it.”

But this isn’t the only blunder the group have had, with Roy admitting one fan recently made a festival promoter print a massive error in the tour programme.

He explained: “Somebody keeps going onto the Wikipedia page and changing it and keeps saying Pete’s [Ellard] left and a new drummer took over in 2018.

“I must change that back every few months and someone goes on there within a day and changes it back!

“The other day, we did this festival and in the programme, it said ‘Headlining today, Scouting For Girls, Roy Stride, Greg Churchouse and their new drummer, James Rowland who took over from Pete.

“I’d love to find who that is.”

Roy is currently appearing on Cameo and says he’s been involved in quite a few marriage proposals for fans.

He said: “They’re really fun and I can sort of sit down and do them on the piano and I can write people a song and change the words of She’s So Lovely.

“I have so much fun doing it and seeing the reaction which you get from them, I spend a bit of time doing them and they’re really special.

“I’ve loved doing the Cameos, it’s been an amazing experience to give our fans something which they never would have got before.”
