The Pogues star Shane MacGowan has worried fans as he confirmed he is “suffering” with a medical condition.
In a candid New Year’s Eve update, the Fairytale of New York singer shared a video to his Twitter account – just weeks after being officially discharged from hospital suffering from an infection.
In the clip, he confirmed he is suffering from encephalitis – a rare and “serious” condition, according to the NHS.

The disease can cause symptoms including “confusion, seizures, difficulty speaking and feeling week” and needs “urgent treatment in hospital”.
Shane could be seen wearing a pair of dark sunglasses inside to protect his eyes from the light as he lounged in a purple polo shirt at home.
At one point in the video, he reached up to hold his forehead, obviously in pain.
The star, however, appeared in good spirits as he told fans: “Hi friends, I’m sitting here suffering from encephalitis. The light is killing me.
“But I wanted to wish you a Happy New Year and Happy Christmas. and many more, and all the luck in the world and all the love. Happy Christmas and Happy New Year, love Shane.”
Writing in his Twitter caption, Shane added: “Happy New Year! Have as much fun as you can when you can!!! Thank you.”
Worried fans soon turned out in the comments section to wish Shane the best, as one penned: “Wishing you a very blessed new year.”

Another said: “Happy New Year Shane. You’ve always looked cool in sunglasses. I hope you are well after your recent hospital stay.”
The Pogues star now uses a wheelchair to get around as he is “unable to walk”, with his wife Victoria Mary Clarke offering updates during his latest hospital stay.
She begged fans to “send prayers” after her husband was admitted, writing: “Please send prayers and healing vibes to @ShaneMacGowan in hospital again and really hoping to get out asap!! Thank you.”
Shane’s medical issues have been exacerbated by addiction, which he has been candid about throughout his lifetime.
And it seemed the final straw when it came to his mobility was breaking his pelvis and left knee, along with tearing a ligament in the joint.
