Peaky Blinders is set to make its return for season six on Sunday, February 27, with Tommy Shelby and his Birmingham gang taking over our lives once again.
After season five ended with Shelby (Cillian Murphy) pointing a gun to his own head, the new season reveals that he didn’t kill himself and why.
With season five of the BBC One series becoming the most-watched season of the show to date, it was no surprise that we got the sixth season.
But will there be a season seven and what is the future of the show? Here’s everything we know so far.
Will there be Peaky Blinders season 7?
A bit of bad news for fans of Peaky Blinders – the sixth season will officially be the final season of the show.
It was announced in January that the BAFTA award-winning series would be wrapping up, though the show creator Steven Knight had told PA in 2019 that he would start writing season seven right after finishing up the sixth.
However, there’s also some good news, as the Shelby gang’s story doesn’t look like it will end with season six, with Knight confirming that a Peaky Blinders movie is going to happen.
Speaking about the future of the period gangster drama to Deadline, Knight said: “We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”
He added: “But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen.”
What will the Peaky Blinders film be about?
Currently, there’s not much information on what plotlines we can expect to see in the Peaky Blinders movie, or even what year it might be set in.
However, Knight’s statements suggest that parts of it could take place during WWII.
In 2018, Knight had said he wanted to produce more seasons of Peaky Blinders making it “a story of a family between two wars, so I always wanted to end it with the first air raid siren in 1939”.
However, he revealed that plans had changed, explaining: “I have revised the scope of what it is. It will now go into and beyond the Second World War.”
So it’s likely that film might be centred around these plot points.
When will they start production for the Peaky Blinders movie?
You might have a while to watch the Peaky Blinders movie. During a BFI London Film Festival panel, Knight revealed that the current plan is for the movie to go into production in Birmingham in 2023.
He told Variety last January: “We are in development. It’s a fully formed idea and it has a beginning, middle and end. And I think it’s going to be a fitting conclusion to the story told so far.”
With this timeline, it seems like the movie won’t be hitting our screens until 2024, but no official dates have been announced so far.
Will there be more Peaky Blinders in the future?
The movie “will probably be the sort of the end of the road for Peaky Blinders as we know it”, according to Knight in late 2021.
However, he also hinted that there might be spin-offs inspired by and including characters from Peaky.
He said: “There will be other TV shows that I hope will come out of [it], that will continue to tell the story of this part of society and this family.”
There’s no information on what these potential shows might be. But Knight did reveal that at least one adaptation is on the way already.
Made in collaboration with Rambert Production, Birmingham Hippodrome and The Lowry, Knight will put up a dance production in the Peaky Blinders universe, titled Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, starting in September 2022.
The show will be directed and choreographed by Benoit Swan Pouffer and will reportedly follow “Tommy Shelby and Grace Burgess through their passionate love affair”.
