BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent takes subtle swipe at co-star after presenter shake-up

BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent didn’t hold back today when she took a subtle swipe at her co-star live on air.

During Monday’s (October 23) visit to the BBC One studios, the 52-year-old broadcaster woke up the nation beside her guest co-host Ben Thompson. The brunette beauty normally hosts the morning news programme from Monday to Wednesday with her co-host Jon Kay.

But during the first instalment of the week, the broadcaster was replaced by Sunday host Ben Thompson. It meant that Sally wasn’t left to host Breakfast along when he turned up to work at the studio, which is in Salford’s MediaCity.

It didn’t take long before the TV presenter was up to her old tricks as they woke up the nation with the latest stories hitting the headlines. One of the light-hearted segments they discussed was the story of one lucky lottery winner who spent his winnings on a pool table.

Sally began: “One lucky lottery winner who has spent his fortune on a new pool table is now preparing to represent England at the sport. Neil Jones from Stoke-on-Trent won £2.4million on the lottery back in 2010 and one of the first things he did with it was buy a pool table.

“The win also allowed him to give up his job as a tiler and devote more time to practice, so he will now captain the England B1 team at the European Pool Championships in Malta next month.” She added: “It’s the practice that does it.”

It was at this point that the presenting duo welcomed Carol Kirkwood onto the show to deliver the latest weather report. Before she revealed the latest developments of Storm Babet, Ben asked if she is any good at the popular pub game.

As he welcomed her onto the show, he chuckled: “I bet Carol is a pool shark as well. Carol, can you play?” It was at this point that Carol burst into laughter as she shared her poor pool table skills.

She giggled: “No, I am absolutely rubbish Ben, the felt would be ripped” as Sally cheekily chimed in with: “She is rubbish, yeah.” But her quiet comment wasn’t lost on Carol who recoiled in shock, adding: “Thanks Sal! But that it absolutely true.”

Luckily the meteorologist managed to laugh off the naughty comment before she started her weather report. It comes after Jon Kay joked that he sent an extermination into the BBC studios to hunt out bed bugs.

Last week, the pair welcomed bedbug detector Kobie the spaniel and his handler onto the show as he shared his perfect pooch’s special skill. It’s fair to say the loveable dog was overwhelmed to be on the signature red sofa and wasted no time in sniffing out the studio.

Sally joked: “At least he hasn’t gone for the sofa which I’m very, very relieved about!” Luckily, the furry friend came back with a clean report at the end of the segment, much to the relief of the cast and crew.

BBC Breakfast airs on weekdays from 6am on BBC One or catch up on BBC iPlayer.
