BBC Strictly star Angela Scanlon’s life – rich hubby, dancing past and transformation

Angela Scanlon’s journey on Strictly Come Dancing isn’t over yet.

The 39-year-old TV presenter and her dance partner Carlos Gu have made it to Blackpool. It’s the part of the competition that every Strictly contestant wants to reach.

She said: It feels amazing, that was the thing when I started the show, this is like the place you want to get it isn’t it? It feels quite iconic and absolutely a privilege to be able to dance in a place that’s so steeped in history and talent and incredible performances for hundreds of years.”

After making a name for herself as a stylist and journalist in her native Ireland, the mother-of-two moved into television in 2012 and went on to present several documentaries for a variety of broadcasters both in Ireland and the UK. A huge breakthrough in her career followed in 2017, meanwhile, as she stepped in at the BBC to provide maternity cover for Alex Jones.

A Garnier ambassador alongside Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall, Angela has also hosted her own BBC Radio 2 show and hosted BBC2 home renovation programme, Your Home Made Perfect. Now, join us as we delve further into Angela’s off-screen life a month shy of her 40th birthday.

Secret dancing past

Angela’s first foray into dancing came many moons before she signed up for Strictly this year. In her youth she danced to moderate success – and even travelled the world to compete against dance teams from other nations.

Originally from County Meath, Angela trained with the O’Shea School of Irish Dancing and appeared with her classmates on an episode of Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast in the early 2000s. In week one of Strictly, however, she told hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkelman that along with mass, Irish dancing is a big part of childhood back home, before adding that despite her background, appearing on the BBC show makes her incredibly nervous.

Following criticism of her place on the show given her dancing background, Angela insisted she’s far from an expert. She told Daily Mail: “Most people, you grow up in Ireland, you do Irish dancing. But I’ve never done ballroom, I’ve certainly never done a rumba or any of this style of dancing. You dance on your own and it’s very stiff.

“So the salsa hips, I don’t know how we’re going to achieve that. I have to take into consideration my partner’s limbs and presence – so we’ll see.”

Banker beau

Angela tied the knot with entrepreneur and former corporate banker, Roy Horgan, in 2014. After several years of dating, the couple married in a lavish ceremony in Wicklow, Ireland.

Roy is believed to be the CEO of SES-imagotag, a global leader of electronic shelf labelling systems and is likely to be bringing in big bucks. In a rare social media post about her spouse on their fourth wedding anniversary, she penned: “Four years ago today, I married this absolute nugget of a human under a tree with all our favourite people heckling. The kindest, smartest, most stubborn man I know. The yin to my yang. The steak to my tofu (or something)… My [world emoji].”

Angela has also revealed how Roy calmed her fears that having children would prove the end of her career. “I am very lucky to have a husband who is hands on, who absolutely supports me,” she explained. “It’s hardcore at times and juggling is a lot but I feel so so lucky.”

Now living in North London, the couple have gone on to have two daughters. Angela gave birth to Ruby Ellen in February 2018, before Marnie Fae was welcomed into the world four years later.

During an Instagram Q&A last year, Angela revealed how she came up with the unique monikers and what exactly inspired them. A fan quizzed her: “How did you decide on your daughters’ names?”

She explained: “I always had Ruby even before I was pregnant. Marnie was a last minute decision. We had other names milling about but this one came late in the day (I think she gave it to me!). She was born in water so it feels fitting too.”

Last month Angela spoke of her determination in setting a good example to her daughters – by refusing to use fake tan whilst appearing on Strictly. She told the Mirror: “I suppose I am quite body confident, (but) more in a defiant way. I know people have talked about the fact that I’m not wearing fake tan, that’s because I think it’s important to lean in to who you are and what you have.

She continued: “As the mum of two girls, what I want for them is to be comfortable in their own skin, whatever that might look like. So if I don’t show that or portray it, I can’t ever expect them to really embody that or feel that. So yeah, I guess I’m quite committed to doing my thing.”

‘Rocky’ date

Angela tends to keep her private life exactly that – however, she did detail a date with Roy earlier this year after vowing to get out more in her New Year’s resolution. Sharing a clip to Instagram in February, she revealed: “So today we are going rock climbing.”

Unable to contain her laughter at the prospect, Angela posted further snaps from an indoor location, showing a series of ominous looking climbing walls.

Body transformation

Earlier in November Angela enthused that she’s in the shape of her life with her Strictly experience leaving her “absolutely ripped”. The star joked that her newly-toned physique had gone down a storm with her husband too, as she opened up on It Takes Two.

“Maybe when he [Roy] sees the samba gear. And maybe the jive gear too because there was a bit of leather in that. My husband’s grand, he’s really happy. He’s enjoying seeing a different side to me that’s been buried for about 40 years. But that was part of the challenge this week.”

She admits she had a “complicated” relationship with her body

Angela says the hard work with Carlos in rehearsals is really paying off, as she continued: “My God, honestly, I feel absolutely ripped and I don’t stop eating. In the past I’ve had quite a complicated relationship with my body and was too hard on myself. After having the girls I went in the opposite direction and was very gentle. But it’s been lovely to be back in a space where I’m being properly pushed physically and I can do it. It’s very good for the confidence I think.”
