Beloved Sopranos star Suzanne Shepherd dies as co-stars pay tribute to ‘force of nature’

Suzanne Shepherd has sadly died at the age of 89, her family have confirmed.

The beloved US actress famously starred in Martin Scorsese’s hit film Goodfellas (1990) and iconic HBO TV drama The Sopranos. Her death was revealed by her granddaughter Isabelle.

Her cause of death has not yet been made public, according to The Sun. Suzanne’s family have reportedly not provided a statement to the outlet.

Her Sopranos co-star Ray Abruzzo took to Instagram on Friday (November 18) to issue a touching statement about her passing. He wrote: “Sad to hear of the passing of Suzanne Shepherd.

“A force of nature. Actress, teacher. Played Carmella’s mother on Sopranos and Karen’s mother in Goodfellas,” he added.

Suzanne played Carmela Soprano’s mother Mary DeAngelis (Edie Falco) in The Sopranos. The veteran also played the mother of Karen Hill (Lorraine Bracco) in crime hit Goodfellas alongside Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta.

Goodfellas is widely thought to be one of the greatest films of all time and was nominated for five Oscars, with Pesci winning Best Supporting actor.

Shepherd enjoyed a successful acting career spanning over 35 years. Her first role came in the 1988 flick Mystic Pizza, where she played Aunt Tweedy.

The actress and director also starred in the Law & Order franchise, appearing in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit back in 2003. Her other acting credits include Requiem for a Dream (2000).

More recently, the actress appeared in projects like Where Is Kyra? (2017) and The Week Of (2018), and 2023’s The Performance. She is survived by her daughter Kate and daughter-in-law Joyce and son-in-law Miles.
