Britney Spears has two sons – Jayden and Sean – from an ill-fated short marriage to Kevin Federline.
The singer’s relationship with her kids was cast again into the spotlight back in August after her ex-husband Kevin claimed the boys “are not seeing her right now” over concerns about the content she posts on Instagram. In retaliation, Britney hit back with a statement, saying she’s been in the limelight long before the days of Instagram.
Kevin alleged the boys hadn’t seen much of their mum in recent times and that they didn’t attend her wedding to now estranged husband Sam Asghari. He said in an interview with ITV that her social media profile – where she often posts nude selfies – is part of the reason for them keeping their distance at the moment.

He said: “I try to explain to them, ‘Look, maybe that’s just another way she tries to express herself.’ But that doesn’t take away from the fact of what it does to them. It’s tough. I can’t imagine how it feels to be a teenager having to go to high school.”
Britney responded to his allegations in a statement, reminding her followers she’s been in the limelight long before Instagram. She said: “It concerns me the fact that the reason is based on my Instagram, it was long before Instagram. I daringly would like for the Federlines to watch the Big Booty video!!! Other artists have made much worse when their children were extremely young!!!!!”
Her now-ex-husband Sam also defended Britney’s relationship with her boys on social media. He said: “There is no validity to his statement regarding the kids distancing themselves and it is irresponsible to make that statement publicly.”
Sam also added: “The boys are very smart and will be 18 soon to make their own decisions and may eventually realise the ‘tough’ part was having a father who hasn’t worked much in over 15 years as a role model. Kevin’s gravy train will end soon [which] probably explains the timing of these hurtful statements.”
Jayden and Sean were pictured recently for the first time since moving to start a new life with their father in Hawaii. The lads moved to the stunning American island three months ago since their stepmother and Kevin’s wife of 10 years, Victoria Prince, got a new job there teaching at the university.
Their father Kevin had his lawyer send a letter to Spears’ lawyer asking if she would consent to letting her two teens move with their father’s family full-time and Britney said yes. Sean and Jayden also have two half sisters from their father’s most recent marriage – Jordan, 12, and Peyton, nine, but they didn’t accompany their brothers to the beach.
Jayden James is 17, and Sean Preston is 18. Britney became a mum at the age of 24, giving birth to Sean on September 14, 2005 and Jayden a year later on September 12, 2006. Her kids arrived a year after she married TV host and DJ Kevin in October 2004, but they divorced in July 2007 after a short marriage. Britney reportedly told Kevin she wanted a divorce two months after giving birth to their second son.
Britney’s two sons were brought up by their father in Miami. She was granted 30% unsupervised visitation rights in September 2019. Last year, Jayden delivered an emotional public plea to his mum – and she responded with a lengthy post of her own to one day “talk again and have a normal conversation”. In a lengthy, four-part post on Instagram, Spears addressed her son directly while also calling out ex-husband Kevin and other members of her family.
The songstress stood firm on her actions and despite saying she was “saddened” by her son’s comments, she took aim at his dad for his role in organising the latest media chats. Explaining to her son the suffering she put up with during her 13-year conservatorship, the Toxic singer began: “I’ve tried my best at being the best person I can be… to be basically held hostage in homes under nurses and bulls*** I hope my kids one day understand my reasoning of my play in water revealing myself as any woman would being held under blankets and supervision under the conservatorship!!!”
She continued: “Finally at 40 without the restraints of what my family did to me … I say to my son Jayden that I send all the love in the world to you every day for the rest of my life!!! My love for my children has no boundaries and it deeply saddens me to know his outcry of saying I wasn’t up to his expectations of a mother.”
But while Britney has had sometimes a strained relationship with the boys in the last few years since dealing with being freed from her conservatorship with her dad in her new memoir, The Woman in Me, which is dedicated to her sons, Britney explains how starting a family was “a dream come true”. The 2021 documentary Framing Britney Spears gave fans an insight into her relationship with her sons, and their family dynamic often hits the headlines even now.
A source told US Weekly: “They are teenagers now and want to be with their friends, not their parents. It’s nothing against Britney. They love and idolise her, and Kevin trusts her. It’s just that they’re getting older, so when they’re not at their main home with Kevin, they’re usually out doing things with friends.”
In May, the Daily Mail revealed that Britney approved of her ex’s plan to move their children to a new life in Hawaii, stating that Britney has “always been a loving and supportive mother” and has never opposed the plan for her sons to relocate – despite Federline threatening court action over an alleged failure to respond from Spears to the relocation request. The source added: “Britney loves her children, has always supported them and wants them to be happy.”
In September this year it was reported that Kevin wanted an increase in child support from Britney. After Sean’s 18th birthday Britney’s child support dropped from $40,000 a month to $20,000. A source close to Britney is reported to have said of the demands: “Kevin has been paid exorbitant monies and one would think if he needed more money he would, at last, obtain a job.”
