Cole Sprouse says his ‘irresponsible’ mum forced him and Dylan to be child stars

Cole Sprouse has blamed his “financially irresponsible” mum for “forcing” him and twin brother Dylan Sprouse into the world of child acting.

The Disney stars grew up on shows like Friends and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody – but now Cole says acting was “never really his passion”.

Instead, it was his mum Melanie Wright who made the twins’ first foray into the industry.

Riverdale star Cole says the pair began work at just eight months old to support their family.

Speaking to Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Cole claimed: “I never made the decision to join the arts or acting specifically. And so it was never really my passion.

“My mother was an incredibly wonderful and artistic woman, but she was financially the most irresponsible woman ever.”

He claims most of the money the twins earned was gone by the time they were 10 years old.

And shortly after that time, custody fell to their father, Matthew Sprouse.

Cole explained: “When my father was given forced custody, we had pretty much lost everything from the youngest parts of our career.”

“That would be Friends and Big Daddy.”

Cole reportedly no longer has any contact with his mum.

But Cole doesn’t regret his childhood, as it means he now has financial stability.

He told Alex: “My parents did not come from too much, and I have now been granted a life of primarily financial stability and surplus in very many cases that is the byproduct of working for 30 years and trading my childhood.

“I don’t regret it at all. There’s definitely resentment and some things I need to work through but if I was given the choice I would probably do it again.”

The star went on to say that The Suite Life proved to be a “life-saving show”, providing him and Dylan with “stability and routine” that they both needed at the time.

And their dad Matthew was always there if they had a problem.

Cole said: “My father is like my best friend. He’s a really solid dude and he had such a rough upbringing that I think he was able to recognise empathetically when my brother and I were going through something.”
