Coronation Street star Ryan Prescott opened up on Chris Gascoyne’s upcoming exit from the ITV soap.
It was announced in July that Chris, 55, was taking an “extended break” and had no plans to return to the Cobbles as Peter Barlow – a role he has played for 23 years. Ryan, 34, who made his first appearance as Ryan Connor in 2018, has worked closely alongside the actor and admitted the soap won’t be the same without him.
Speaking at the Inside Soap Awards, he exclusively told Daily Star: “He’s a fantastic actor to work with. Chris is the kind of person who could have gone off and done anything and he dedicated 20 odd years to the show, so to see him go it won’t be the same show. I will miss him dearly.

The soap star added: “I will stay in touch with him but working with him every day is one of the best things about coming to work. He’s one of those guys, he’s a real actor in the sense that he is nitty gritty and he cares about his work, even after so long he cares about technique and whatever he’s working with that day. He brings stuff to soap we don’t always see.”
Chris made his first appearance as Peter in December 2000, arriving during the live episode for its 40th anniversary. He left the soap for the first time in 2003 but was unable to stay away from the cobbles and returned in 2007.
His next departure came in 2015, however he made a comeback just one year later and has played the role ever since. Peter has been a core part of the soap since his arrival and his on-off relationship with Carla Connor (Alison King) has become a firm favourite amongst fans.
Teasing how his co-star is set to exit the soap, Ryan explained that Carla will be heavily involved. He said: “I’m not sure what I can say but I think whatever fashion he leaves in, it will be between them two [Carla and Peter] primarily and it will be something special.
“They’re two incredible actors, the chemistry between them on set it bleeds into everything else going on. Whatever it is they’ll be fantastic.”
Alison, 50, who has played Carla since 2006, also opened up on her on-screen hubby’s break from the soap, insisting she “hates it” when he leaves. “Yes, I think so,” she told Daily Star and other press.
“I hate it when he leaves me. But luckily, I just hand him over to his normal wife and let her have him for a bit, and then he comes back, and he can have his on-screen wife for a bit!”
