Dancing on Ice’s Roxy Shahidi shares views on headbanger after co-star’s horror injury

Emmerdale star Roxy Shahidi revealed she wouldn’t rule out tackling the notorious headbanger.

The actress, 40, will appear on the next series of Dancing on Ice, set to kick off in January 2024. Roxy has been partnered with Sylvain Longchambon and opened up about the risky moves they could potentially take on.

The headbanger is one of the most dangerous moves and involves the male spinning his partner from her ankles before moving her up and down. This leaves the female’s head just inches away from the ice.

It has been executed countless times on the show, but there have been occasions where it hasn’t gone to plan. While rehearsing for the Dancing on Ice tour in 2010, Gaynor Faye was taken to hospital after a fall caused her to cut her chin open.

Gaynor, who won Dancing on Ice in 2006, was given three stitches at the city’s Northern General Hospital but was luckily given the all-clear to skate again. The actress, who played Megan Macey on Emmerdale from 2012 until 2019, reportedly still has a scar on her chin from the incident.

Asked about the possibility of taking on the stunt, Roxy responded: “I don’t know. When you do that, you have to hold your position but it’s more about your partner’s strength and ability.”

She continued: “I’ve been partnered with Sylvain and he’s been doing it for years so I completely trust him. It’s whether or not you can face that fear factor. Gaynor in rehearsal still has a scar on her chin from doing that. I don’t know is the answer.”

Asked if she would rule it out, the soap star admitted she wouldn’t. She added: “I think it would be unfair to rule anything out at this stage because you don’t know how you’re going to feel when you’re on the ice. It changes as you learn and grow and it might be with certain things you might feel more cautious”.

She concluded: “I won’t know until I’m there.” Roxy has portrayed Leyla Harding since 2008 and recently said goodbye to co-star Matthew Wolfenden, who quit his role of David Metcalfe. Since leaving, the actor has landed the role of Buddy in Elf The Musical at the Dominion Theatre.

Discussing his new role, Roxy said: “I think it’s absolutely fantastic! I mean, he’s playing the lead in a West End. How incredible and the part is so perfect for him to play Buddy the Elf. I think he’s going to be absolutely fantastic. We’re all going down on the press night to see it. I think it’ll be absolutely fantastic, what a great part, chance of a lifetime!”
