EastEnders icon set to ‘return from dead’ after 21 years in explosive Phil Mitchell twist

EastEnders fans have been glued to their screens ever since Cindy Beale returned after 25 years.

Cindy, played by Michelle Collins, made an explosive comeback earlier this week and reunited with those who believed she had died during childbirth decades earlier.

But she might not be the only icon villain returning from the dead as Daily Star used artificially intelligent “creative” tool Bard AI to expose who else could be reprising their role.

When asked who else could return to Walford this year, the AI system predicted one familiar face who was last seen more than two decades ago.

Steve Owen (Martin Kemp) first arrived in 1998 and had a tumultuous four years in Albert Square, murdering his girlfriend Saskia Duncan (Deborah Sheridan-Taylor) and becoming one of Phil Mitchell’s (Steve McFadden) greatest enemies.

Their bitter feud reached its climax when Phil slept with Steve’s wife Mel (Tamzin Outhwaite) and he prepared the ultimate revenge by snatching Phil’s daughter, Louise.

A frantic car chase ensued between the two men, resulting in Steve crashing into a wall.

Steve managed to pass an unharmed Louise to safety, but as Phil hesitated to return and save his enemy, the car exploded with the villain inside.

Despite his dramatic death, the AI program has predicted that he could return and reignite his feud with Phil.

It said: “It is possible that Steve Owen could return from the dead and take revenge on Phil Mitchell.

Recognising that EastEnders has a history of bringing back characters who are presumed dead, the system added: “Steve’s body was never found, so there is always the possibility that he could have survived the car accident that supposedly killed him.

“And if he did survive, then he would have a lot of reasons to want to get revenge on Phil”.

Steve’s return wouldn’t be without its obstacles however, as AI continued: “First of all, Steve would need to find a way to stay hidden from the police.

“Secondly, Steve would need to find a way to get close to Phil without being detected. Phil is a very powerful man so it would be difficult for Steve to get close to him without raising any suspicions.”

However, The AI tool noted that bringing Steve back from the dead could be seen as a “cheap gimmick,” meaning producers wouldn’t want to go back down that route.
