Elton John awkwardly 'snubs' radio hosts after not realising his microphone is on

Music legend Elton John was caught in an epic name blunder before his Capital Breakfast interview last year – in an unaired moment where he didn’t realise the whole studio could hear him.

The 75-year-old Tiny Dancer hitmaker might one of the best-selling artists of all time, but it seems he could use some practice when it comes to learning names.

Elton did an interview with Capital Breakfast trio Roman Kemp, Sonny Jay and Sian Welby last September – but he left the trio “wetting themselves” in the studio when they heard him botching every one of their names.

Capital FM star Sonny spoke exclusively to Daily Star about Elton’s hilarious name gaffe – as well as leaving the Breakfast for an exciting new spot on Capital’s Late Show, where he hosts Monday to Thursday from 10pm until 1am.

Recalling the Elton interview, Sonny said: “He [Elton] is such a sweet man, but there was a moment when he didn’t realise that we were able to hear him, and it was just before we were going to start speaking to him.

Whoever was sitting next to him was [telling him], ‘It’s Roman, Sonny and Sian,’ and he’s going, ‘Ronan’, as in Ronan Keating, ‘Sammy’ and just like ‘Sean’.”

We were wetting ourselves thinking, if he comes on and says Roman, Sammy and Sean, this is going to be the best interview ever.”

Sonny went on to admit he wouldn’t have dared correct the record-breaking artist had he continued to confuse his name during the interview.

It just reminded me of when you introduce your nan to someone and they can’t get your name right,” Sonny said.

“I’m not gonna go, ‘Actually mate it’s Sonny, do you know what I mean? Just let him do it.”

Sonny revealed that taking over the Capital Late Show was a “bit of a dream” of his, explaining it “felt like the natural progression of where I want to be and what I want to do.”

But he cheekily added: “Obviously I’m not going to brag too much about it, but the amount of sleep I’m getting now is just unbelievable! I’ve got no 4am alarms anymore. I feel like a different man.”

Tune into The Capital Late Show with Sonny Jay Monday-Thursdays from 10pm-1am across the UK and on Global Player.
