Emma Stone’s daily shower trick helps her unwind after filming filthy sex scenes

Emma Stone had a daily shower routine which would help “wash the day off” after filming filthy sex scenes.

The Oscar-winning actress is the star in sultry sci-fi flick, Poor Things, which saw some viewers having to leave its September premiere early thanks to its graphic scenes. And to unwind after a long day of filming romps on set, the 35-year-old’s intimacy co-ordinator, Elle McAlpine, suggested she took some time for herself in the shower.

Emma played Bella Baxter who is brought back from the dead as her unborn child’s brain is implanted into her head. Audience’s were left squirming as they followed her road to discovery – including one crude scene, as a critic put it, which saw her “stuffing cucumbers” in her “hairy business”.

Take a look at what the critics said about Poor Things ahead of its official release in January, 2024, here.

But in order to get the best out of Emma and her co-stars, Elle noted the importance of detaching from the day as it could be taxing filming so many sex scenes. She would give Emma exercises to “wash the day off” and says she would “bookend [her] days on that set with cold showers,” she told Vanity Fair.

Due to Bella’s insatiable appetite to hop in the sack, filming the sheer number of intimate scenes might have been demanding for Emma and her on-screen lovers, she said. And sometimes, what’s real and fantasy can sometimes get muddled up.

“It can make you feel quite vulnerable,” Elle explained. “Your body is an incredibly smart vehicle, but it sometimes doesn’t register what’s fantasy and what’s not.

“So by default, you can sometimes come away from doing sex scenes feeling quite vulnerable.”

Creating an element of space also allows the stars the freedom of expression on-screen. It allowed Emma to move away from the stereotypical and “unimaginative” back-bending orgasm to something more raw and real, Elle explained.

She added: “This story was about that liberation and about that sexual freedom and about that experimentation.”

And the film’s director, Yorgos Lanthimos, often allowed Elle and the stars free reign to try different sex positions which fit the mood of the scene. “I said to them, ‘Yorgos hadn’t specified what kind of position we’re going to be using on the day,” she said.

“So it could be a plethora of positions that we try.”
