“He’s kind of taking it all in and realises he’s going and getting support from the people of the village. There’s some lovely stuff before he goes.

“He goes to The Woolpack and Man Club are there and really support him, it’s really well written.”

The soap star admitted that he got emotional when going over his lines before filming the scenes.

Liam said: “It made me cry a few times reading it. It’s very emotional and I feel really lucky to get that sort of script.

“He’s presuming he’s going to get three years or something but whatever Dan does, when he comes out, if he comes out, he’s going to be a different man.”

Teasing whether or not Dan will be sent to jail, he continued: “Who knows, who knows. Maybe for a bit, maybe not at all.

“There’s going to be some changes without a shadow of a doubt but we’ll have to wait and see.

“Something like this is going to make him look at life in a completely different way and quite rightly so.

“Whatever happens, he can’t be the same again whether it’s a custodial sentence or not.”

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
