HBO’s The Idol cut short after just five episodes as fans fume ‘it didn’t even climax’

HBO has pulled the plug on its erotic series The Idol after just five episodes.

Fans – who have been trashing Lily-Rose Depp’s latest effort – have been left fuming with the abrupt ending, claiming that the show “didn’t even get to climax” after all the build-up.

However, HBO has confirmed that when creator Sam Levinson took over the programme, the order was chopped from the initial six episodes to just five.

The show underwent a creative overhaul, with director Amy Seimetz exiting the series last year.

Levinson believed he could “tell the story in a more economical way”, hence the sudden shutdown of the programme, which is set to air its season finale on Sunday, July 2.

Angry fans soon turned to social media to vent their frustration – questioning how all the loose ends could possibly be tied up in one more 60 minute episode.

One penned: “Seriously, all that drama and controversy for just 5 episodes??? ! I feel like I wasted my time watching The Idol. Very, very disappointed.”

As another agreed: “I’m starting to think either The Idol critics were saying stuff just to say it to exaggerate or they were genuinely right and Sam cut out certain scenes.”

Somebody else posted: “5 episodes? Lmaooooo we haven’t even reached a climax!”

As a fourth fan fumed: “Seriously? It hasn’t gone anywhere, where are they going to go in 1 episode, there are so many stories going on every which way.”

Though it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not the show will be renewed for a second season, last week’s episode attracted only 133,000 viewers.

Cutting the first series to five episodes also means that it won’t be eligible for consideration at the Emmy awards, which requires at least a six-episode season to make the shortlist.

The fourth episode was branded “wild” by fans, and saw Troye Sivan’s character Xander placed in a remote control shock collar by Tedros, played by The Weeknd.

Things ended in a bizarre sponge bath scene, if you were wondering.

It’s not the worst episode ever, though, as fans were left repulsed by the “worst sex scene in history” back in episode two.

Lily-Rose’s character Jocelyn was standing blindfolded as Tedros gave her explicit instructions, telling her to: “F***ing stretch that tiny, little p***y.”

That lost the show 113,000 viewers.
