‘I starred in popular Netflix series but pay was so bad I was forced to keep normal job’

Orange is the New Black star Diane Guerrero has admitted that she had to work two jobs while starring in the Netflix classic just to keep herself afloat.

The actress, who played Maritza Ramos in the show, was forced to work her “normal job” at the same time as acting in the award winning series.

She recently opened up about her life during that time and shared details of her stressful work-life balance.

Diane spoke to The New Yorker and said: “How could you tell this complete stranger how much you’re getting paid for being on a television show?”

“Because everyone’s reaction would be like: ‘Oh my god, I love you on that show! But also, what are you doing here?’ It was this incredulity that was teetering on offensive.”

Netflix landed a whopping 105 million views for Orange is the New Black, but despite the show’s incredible success, Diane’s pay didn’t reflect that.

Guerrero worked at a bar way into her acting career, throughout several seasons of the dark comedy series, before she could even consider turning her back on hospitality.

To add salt to the wound, Diane’s character also worked as a waitress before she found herself in prison.

Maritza was a beloved character on the show and had a serious passion for fashion.

Viewers fell in love with Ramos and watched her flourish throughout the seasons as she discovered her heritage.

During the series, Ramos found out that she was born in Colombia – not in New York as she originally thought.

Diane’s co-stars have also spoken out against Netflix and highlighted the unfair wages they received for their time.

Matt McGorry, who played a corrections officer, wrote on social media that he “kept his day job the entire time he was on the show” because the role “paid better than the mega-hit TV show” he was part of.

Beth Dover, who OITNB fans will recognise as manager of the company that took over Litchfield Penitentiary, also added her thoughts.

She wrote: “It actually cost me money to be in season [three and four[ since I was cast local hire and had to fly myself out, etc.”

“But I was so excited for the opportunity to be on a show so I took the hit. It’s maddening.”
