‘I went to watch Margot Robbie’s Barbie movie and final scene left me gobsmacked’

Life is plastic and the highly-anticipated Barbie movie is fantastic indeed.

The one hour 54 minute long feature film sees the famous blonde doll and “friend” Ken go on a journey of self-discovery after leaving Barbie Land for the Real World.

Margot Robbie was born to play Barbie and it’s hard to believe that Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were originally cast as the titular character.

Hilarious Ryan captures the flamboyant character perfectly with his wacky outfits and exaggerated mannerisms.

The pair are not the only ones to play the iconic roles as much like the dolls themselves, there are multiple variations.

Actress Nicola Coughlan, pop star Dua Lipa and several other stars take on the roles of Barbie.

Meanwhile, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu and new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa also star as different takes of the male doll.

Barbie and Ken cause chaos as soon as they step foot in the Real World and doll makers Mattel will stop at nothing to capture the dynamic duo.

Will Ferrell shines as the CEO of Mattel, providing a laugh in every scene he appears in.

There’s also blink-and-you-miss-it cameo appearances from Gavin and Stacey legend Rob Brydon and Love Island hunk Chris Taylor while Helen Mirren dominates as the comical narrator.

Despite Barbie being typically associated with children, there is the odd innuendo for grown-ups scattered throughout the movie.

The film is rated 12A which means it contains material that is not suitable generally for children aged under 12.

There are some pop culture references that the young ones won’t understand but they don’t distract from the main action.

It could be argued that some younger viewers won’t understand exactly what’s being said in some sections.

In particular, there’s a moment when Ken reads a book about “patriarchy” before deciding to turn Barbie World into a male-dominant space and Barbie goes to visit the gynaecologist in the final scene of the movie, raising some eyebrows in the audience.

The visit to the doctors before the end credits rolled came after a witty comment is made pointing out that both Barbie and Ken don’t have any genitals.

Some parents in the crowd were left squirming at the thought of explaining what they’ve just watched to their little ones.

Barbie is visually pleasing throughout with a stunning set designs and flawless costumes, making every shot a feast for the eyes.

The soundtrack, which features songs from Nicki Minaj and Lizzo, is extremely catchy and the eye-catching choreography got legs tapping.

Director Greta Gerwig brings a necessary element of feminism to the movie but the message isn’t the main focus of the film.

A standout moment comes from America Ferrera’s character Gloria, who gives a powerful speech to “weird” Barbies about how women do everything they can to get people to like them.

Overall, it may not be for everyone but Barbie fans will not be disappointed and it won’t be a surprise to anyone that a sequel gets the green light in the near future.
