ITV slam Phillip Schofield ‘cover-up’ claims and say he ‘lied to Holly’

ITV have released a statement after Phillip Schofield’s bombshell announcement he had an affair with a younger male colleague while married.

They have hit back at claims that they covered up Phillip’s relationship after the presenter admitted to the affair in a lengthy statement on May 26.

ITV has said it was “not provided with, and did not find, any evidence of a relationship beyond hearsay and rumour” when it investigated rumours of a relationship between Phillip Schofield and an ITV employee which were denied by both parties in early 2020.”

The statement read: “Further to our statement last night, ITV can confirm that when rumours of a relationship between Phillip Schofield and an employee of ITV first began to circulate in early 2020 ITV investigated.

“Both parties were questioned and both categorically and repeatedly denied the rumours as did Phillip’s then agency YMU.

“In addition, ITV spoke to a number of people who worked on This Morning and were not provided with, and did not find, any evidence of a relationship beyond hearsay and rumour.

“Phillip’s statement yesterday reveals that he lied to people at ITV, from senior management to fellow presenters, to YMU, to the media and to others over this relationship.”

Phillip’s former co-star Eamonn Holmes had alluded to Phillip lying about the affair as he tweeted: “Schofield has finally been caught out … But he’s not the only guilty party. 4 high members of Itv management knew what sort of man he was.”

In a statement shared on May 26, Phillip said he was resigning from ITV with immediate effect and would no longer be working with his talent agency, which he has been with for 35 years.

Part of it read: “I am painfully conscious that I have lied to my employers at ITV, to my colleagues and friends, to my agents, to the media and therefore the public and most importantly of all to my family. I am so very, very sorry, as I am for having been unfaithful to my wife.”

Phillip’s replacement on This Morning and Dancing on Ice is yet to be revealed.

This Morning airs on weekdays at 10am on ITV.
